Since you mentioned the bezel I have found some coins with real tight

Rims; mix in a little dirt on the parting line and it could be.

You may be right.  I would expect to see more reed damage though.

Here is a bezel on a Kennedy.   A thick one, casts a shadow on the denticles location.
