1970 D with an S (or S with a D) Jefferson Nickel...??

5 posts in this topic

Hello all.

Came across this shabby looking 1970 D Jefferson Nickel. Was gonna toss it back when I saw some smudges the south of the '0' in 1970 and to the east of the D mint mark that looked suspiciously like an 'S'. So I stuck it under the scope.... Any and all contributions welcome. I have not been able to find anything concerning what I see here.

Welcome to the forum.

It looks like you have a stain that resembles a "s." The fact that it is right next to a "D" mint mark, and is roughly the same size, makes it  look more like an "s" than it would appear if it were sitting by itself on a different part of the coin.

Thank you and glad to be here!

I appreciate your view. I thought the same at first. I used an 'x-ray' of sorts type of filter on the last image and , to me, it clearly shows the 'S' is an impression. Distinct edges even the serif is visible. Below are additional images. One, I took on a previous occasion. They are both  on an 'Emboss" type filter that also shows impression,

If I read you correctly,  it is not raised, like the letters on the coin, but is in incused. I assume that is what you meant by the term, "impression." If it is an impression, then it is damage, and did not happen at the mint.
