That's pretty darn cool! thumbsup2.gif The triplet thing, though, might take a while. Since these are Morgan dollars you will have a decent chance of finding the third. In my years collecting toned coins I have only come across one set of three coins where the toning was nearly identical and the coins weren't either Morgans or classic commems. These are three 1951-S Washingtons that I own and I also refer to them as the triplets.

Shane, I wonder if they didn't come out of the Fitzgerald hoard. He had bags and bags of them stashed in a warehouse after the Mint switched to clad coinage in '65.

Almost identical twins. Good luck finding the triplet !

They'll make a nice looking multi-set !

...and which coin doctor is the daddy!! insane.gif

Really though, those little youngsters are awesome! The shared DNA is a major bonus.

No clue I haven't heard of that hoard...but I wouldn't mind finding out more so I can see if there are any other matching "O" mints yay.gif

Shane nice coins.

Your best bet will probably be the 83-O, 86-O's with attractive toning are few and far between.

Hey! What happened to the picture? Did you forget to pay your cable bill?

Fitzgerald's was one of the old casinos in the Reno/Tahoe area. He also had other businesses, warehouses, etc. The family sold one of the warehouses last year, and the new owner found a huge stash of canvas bags in the basement. I can't recall the exact numbers, but there were thousands and thousands of silver dollars. After the Mint switched to clad coinage, Fitzgerald removed all of the silver dollars from the casino and there was a gradual replacement with the new composite gaming tokens. Apparently, those silver dollar-filled canvas bags had lain in the warehouse for about 40 years.

Getting back to your twins, I could see how some dollars stored in canvas bags for 40 years could develop toning similar to yours. Nice coins! If you should luck out and find the (missing) triplet, are you going to give them names? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Maybe Larry, Curly, and Moe screwy.gif

Nope never heard that stroy....I agree it is certainly reasonable to assume there were some toners in those bags.....I think one of the coins is in an older NGC slab so depending on how long ago this find was....that may rule iout the possibility it came from there.

I'm going to have to apologize to you, KC, for possibly engaging in inadvertant hyperbole about my triplets. I just went back and looked at the images of the coins and, while they are toned as triplets, they aren't identical triplets. If you were to look at the three coins you would immediately see that they have the same toning, yet they do not look the same. Was any of that clear? confused-smiley-013.gif

Anyway, all I have are scans of them, so if I have better images at some point I will post them. The scans are rather nasty.

Reminds me of a joke. Rodney Dangerfield: "I get no respect! When I was born, the doctor turned me over and said 'Look! Twins!'. I tell you...I get no respect!"

Nice pieces there Krypton! yay.gif

Yes I agree.....I thought if I could win it for like$40 it might be worth having even if it didn't go into the multi coin holder....but I bid like $42 and still wasn't the high bidder so......no thanks thumbsup2.gif
