Well...what you have appears to be a token.  There was never any coin minted which looks like what you posted.  A great place to familiarize yourself with US coins in NGC's Coin Explorer.  All of the major types are discussed and illustrated there:

That will get you started in recognizing the actual types of coins minted by the United States.

Same design but the lettering is completely different than the OP coin

In all likelihood it is pure brass plated over pure lead.
