SLABBED COIN BUYER BEWARE!!!

9 posts in this topic

There have been a large increase of counterfeits popping up and when you try to verify the coin by using the coin certification on the NGC and PCGS sites the coin slabs that are counterfeit match the true submission number so the slab will appear to be real. There are many ways to detect the fake slabs but the best way to stop this would be for are government to BUST the people doing it.

ALIBABA has the fakes all over their site if you do a hard search to try to find them. These people need to be put in jail and the Country allowing it needs to crack down on these people!

Some of the biggest differences between real slabs and the fake ones are on the counterfeits they have a straight dash between the submission number instead of an angled dash. At the top of the slab when you look through the slab you should not see any welded seams and on the reverse all of the seals should have NO WORDS MISSPELLED!

This is a link right off of ALIBABA showing how easy it is to purchase these fakes!

NGC really needs to get involved in this before it destroys the market.

It's important when verifying in hand that the coin marks match up with the pictures in addition to an inspection of the holder seams (look for white crazing indicating seam separation) and of course font/text of the label.

NGC also has the following on their site: http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=954

Nothing is infallible of course.

That is correct Matt. Some do not have pictures though so use all the tools you have to make sure you do not get dupped and thank you Paul S as well. To Paul S, There are many more than just this seller on that site who are selling these! It is also hard to pull up the ones who are but if you are persistent you can find them.

Counterfeit slabs are unfortunately well known in the hobby and have been discussed here on this forum and in many other places for a long time. Spreading awareness about them is never a bad idea.

A collector at a flea market told me about a better date Morgan counterfeit in a PCGS faked slab he bought at a pawn shop for $500. He said he bought it to show it to the PCGS people at Baltimore.

NGC announced this week a large expansion of their certification services out of Shanghai.

"SLABBED COIN BUYER"

Where did they find a slab big enough to hold a coin buyer?

The funeral industry has had them for a LOOOOONG time.

How do you suggest out government go about busting and putting in jail people who are listing these things when they live in countries where our laws do not apply, and where what they are doing is not illegal under the local laws?

The people breaking the law are the people here in the US that are buying them and bringing them into the country. How do you track down the buyers? Mandate surveillance by the government on anyone who goes to the Alibaba website?

Maybe one of Alibaba's Forty Thieves has a solution (a new kind of 'coin dip') for this?
