Deluxe Hardbound Editions of Pittman, Norweb, Eliasberg, and Price

The John Jay Pittman Collection. Selected Numismatic Rarities. Parts 1, 2, and 3. Deluxe Hardbound Edition I have been able to find auction records of only about 10 sets selling in the last decade – the latest of which was sold more than a year ago! Opportunities to acquire a set of Deluxe Pittman catalogs are few and far between. An exceedingly rare, handsomely bound catalog of one of the landmark sales of the 20th century – what more could a numismatist bibliophile ask for? - $799. Now reduced to $749.

These catalogs have been stored boxed in bubblewrap since the time of the sale and are all in pristine condition.

Part One, October 21-30 23, 1997. 303pp. 1264 lots. 12 color plates. Bound in exquisite, bright red leatherette. Prices realized list tucked into pocket on back cover. A special bookplate attached to front pastedown indicating date of sale, with signatures of Gehring C. Pittman, David W. Ackers, Thomas A. Mulvaney and Donald L. Slouffman. Number 79 of 250. The bookplate is loose but present, as is often the case (this can be easily re-affixed if the buyer should choose to do so).

Part Three, August 6-8, 1999. 503pp. 2135-5250 lots. 12 color plates. Bound in exquisite, bright red leatherette. Prices realized list tucked into pocket on back cover. The bookplate is loose but present (this can be easily re-affixed if the buyer should choose to do so).

The Dr. Thaine B. Price Collection. May 19, 1998. David Akers. 120 pages. 213 lots. – Bound in blue leatherette with gilt lettering. Like new condition. A special bookplate attached to front pastedown indicating date of sale, with signatures of Dr. Thaine B. Price, David W. Akers, and Thomas A. Mulvaney. Number 79 of 250. The bookplate is loose but present, as is often the case (this can be easily re-affixed if the buyer should choose to do so). - $75. Now reduced to $69.

From the Experts at PCGS: “Dr. Thaine B. Price collected coins for over two decades. His goal was to assemble the finest possible set of 20th Century gold series, i.e. the four series minted from 1908 to 1933. Dr. Price had a great eye for quality and he was assisted in his pursuit by one of the top experts/dealers in the field, David Akers. Dr. Price also decided to put together the finest possible set of circulation strike Barber half dollars, and he also built a nearly complete set of Gem proof Barber halves. When David Akers auctioned the Price collection in 1998, it was one of the major events of the year, even though the auction only had 213 coins.

The Price collection of $5 Indians was spectacular, perhaps the best ever assembled. The set featured many Gems and Superb Gems, including some "finest known" specimens. The key 1909-O was the Eliasberg coin and it brought a mind-boggling $374,000 at the 1998 Price sale. The rare 1910-S was also the Eliasberg coin. The key 1913-S was a spectacular MS66 and it brought $110,000 at the Price sale. The 1915-S was a gorgeous MS65 and it brought $66,000 at the Price sale.”

Complete set of “Apostrophe” Auction Catalogs. Held jointly by Stacks, Superior, RORCOA, and Paramount. David Akers took the place of Paramount from 1988 to 1990. Each sale was limited to a total of 2000 lots, with 500 lots being contributed by each participating auction firm. A particular focus was given to coins of the highest caliber – the realized prices speak for the quality of the coins; the 24,000 lots contained in the 12 sales sold for a total combined $135 million!

The pages of these catalogs contain countless rarities. The RARCOA website states that “Many of the greatest rarities in American numismatics were sold by RARCOA in these sales, including the Dexter 1804 Dollar, the 1894-S Barber Dime, and a plethora of proof gold coins. Auction '79 included the first Brasher Doubloon sold at public auction since the Ten Eyck sale in 1922.”

The following complete set is perhaps as choice a set as one may come across. Of the 12 catalogs, 8 are still wrapped in their factory cellophane. Given the scarcity of these catalogs in such lofty preservation, I have fully described the condition, down to any imperfections in the cellophane wrap. Sure to please even the most fastidious numismatic bibliophile. - $SOLD

Excellent description, as given in Kolbe and Fanning sale: A most important sale featuring, among others, coins from the Dunham, Neil, Green, At-water, Olson, Roe, Farouk, Roach, Granberg, Newcomer and Haseltine collections.
