1855-C Gold Dollar, AU58

Only Type Two C-Mint Issue

1855-C G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The 1855-C is the only Type Two gold dollar from the Charlotte Mint, with a mintage of just 9,803 pieces. Perhaps 250-350 examples are known today in all grades and high-grade pieces are quite rare.

 

This coin is an attractive near-Mint specimen with a typical strike for the issue. The centers of both sides are soft, as almost always seen, because of the high relief of the bust. The letters in the date are weak and LL in DOLLAR are missing. The peripheries show better detail. The pleasing peach-gold surfaces exhibit only minor contact marks and the overall presentation is quite appealing.
