1893-S Morgan, what has its price trend been?

6 posts in this topic

I posted this across the street but I'm hoping to get more thoughtful answers here...

I'm thinking that within 2-3 months I may take a plunge into my most expensive ever coin. And I think it will be an 1893-S (low-end, of course, VG-F range). Does anyone have an idea of what the "performance" of this coin has been? Yes, this is part investment part collection. Yes, I know all the usual caveats so let's skip that and get to the details.

Or do you have another idea for a good part investment, part collection key date coin that will perform better?

probably one of the tougher key dates in any series, not so much that they don't exist, but they don't seem to get out as much.

I have tried a number of times to buy then at greysheet. Everyone who has one for sale wants 15-20% overbid.

I know a guy who was selling one that I passed on. I thought he wanted a little too much of a premium. Feel free to email me at sarasotafrank@hotmail.com if you want to try him.

Well, right now I'm not in the position to buy it, but I should be by the end of March. But looking at the prices the most I could probably get would be a F-12/F-15 one. If it is in that range or VG, lemme know.

I think that they'll always hold their value. There just seems to be a major shortage of them. Even at a lot of shows, I haven't seen a whole lot of them, and the ones I've seen are F-AG. The ones I saw, were typically about 15% over greysheet.

My take on the market is that Dollars have been a little slow except for toned material. Even the better date coins are a little slow. I think that right now is a good time to buy, before silver takes off after gold and drives the market in dollars. Gold has the focus right now but it will not be long before silver follows.

The only thing is, I don't want to buy gold now. I just don't like where it is priced. I was OK with it about $40/oz ago back in Dec. but now I'm hesitant. But as I do some looking into it, I'm not sure I want to sink some major $$$ in a coin right now. Want to hold back a bit and see what happens in the next few months.
