1889 Guatemala 1/4 real date over strike

Hi Everyone. As most of you know I collect mostly Lincoln Memorials for my registry sets. I belong to the Tampa Bay Coin Club which has been around for a very long time and we have an auction every month at our meetings to help raise funds for the club. I bought this 1889 Guatemala 1/4 real not because it fit into any of my registry sets but to support the club and also because it is silver and old. I paid $6.00. The coin itself is not very expensive at all. What I found interesting and need help with is the date over strike. Sorry about the picture but this is a very small coin but you can clearly see over strike on the date. The date is the only part of the coin that looks like this. Can any one tell me if these coins were struck in 1889 using an earlier dated example? Thaks for your help and as always thanks for looking and Happy Collecting

There are no over-dates listed in Krause, but it could just be a repunched date I think? Sorry, I wish I could help more. Cool coin, I love how small the 1/4 Real coins are, and I really like the sun over the mountains design.

This is known as the "Volcano Coin", and is quite scarce, and it appears you have a good condidtion one as they were used extensively in the back country for small purchases. This is a common type struck in 1889 thru 1891. Completely anepigraphic, lacking a mintmark or county of origin and bearing only a date. The doubling of the date was a normal thing, as with the mistake, and low value, it was not worth the mints time to concern itself with the anomaly, so most have it. I believe it is catgalog number 157 or 158. On the other side, is a huge 1/4 REAL with five stars, embedded in a wreath. Large graphics kept artwork cost low.

The coin is mostly silver, probably in the 85 - 90% range. Hope that helps. Look for one with a G instead of a date. Means, of course, Guatemala

NICE COIN!!!!
