What's up with this doubling?

4 posts in this topic

I just received my Morgan Dollar Clash tool so I've been going through the collection checking for VAM's. This one is an 1887 P Morgan in an NGC slab with no VAM attribution. A check on the Variety Plus page shows the following;

1887/1887 TOP-100 S$1 VAM-5

Variety Diagnostics

The entire date was repunched slightly counter-clockwise to the first impression.

There's no pictured listed.

This one has something going on with the base of the 1 and the bottoms of the 8's. Also look at the top of the 7.

Mike, it's definitely not a VAM-5. The doubling is in the wrong place. Have you checked it against the VAMWorld listings? It's a lot easier for you to narrow down the field because you have the coin in-hand.

Thanks Chris - I got it nailed down. VAM-11.

Are you sure about VAM-11? The description doesn't say anything about doubling on the date. It only describes the clashed "n" and the markers for it.
