Weekday Teletrade Bargain by JAA USA/Philippines Collection

I normally don't monitor weekday Teletrade auctions as USA-Philippine coins are generally not offered during the week. Monday's Teletrade auction was the exception in that it offered a number of Gem and Near Gem One Centavos.

All of the coins were either 1931-M or 1934-M. I already own a beautiful 1934-M in MS66 RB so the 1934-M specimens did not interest me. The 1931-M is a date that I needed and there were several specimens in this auction. The nicest example was a 1931-M MS65 RB.

Although the 1931-M One Centavo is a common date (mintage 5,659,355) the certified population in MS65 and above is fairly small. The Combined NGC/PCGS Population in MS65 RB is only fifteen specimens with none graded higher. The Combined NGC/PCGS population in MS65 RD is twelve specimens. Only two examples of this date have ever graded higher than MS65 (one NGC MS66 RD and one PCGS MS66 RD). That makes a 1931-M in MS65 RB a nice collectible example of this date.

What makes this specimen particularly attractive is that it is exceptionally well struck. Light strikes are commonly seen throughout the Manila mint issues and the mint-mark M often appears as an almost indistinguishable letter. As you can see from the attached picture my specimen has a boldly struck mint-mark.

The 2012 Allen catalog lists a book value of $125.00 for a 1931-M One Centavo in MS65. The hammer price for my 1931-M One Centavo (PCGS MS65 RB) was $65.00. When you add the buyer's fee and shipping my final invoice price came to $80.75. This is a very reasonable price for this coin and a nice weekday bargain.

A 1931-M One Centavo in MS65 RB receives 624 Registry Points.
