Custom registry sets can be inspirational.

One of my favorite features on the NGC registry is the ability to create and share custom sets.

One of my personal favorite custom sets is:

"Tom's "1876 Centennial Set"

I love the concept of putting a set together celebrating our Nation's 100th Birthday. This set is an example of how you can piece together something historically significant and meaningful on a budget and create a beautiful collection in the process. This set is inspiring.

*Tom, if you read this Journal entry or if a fellow numismatist who knows Tom7422 happens to read this, please contact me via the Collector's Society member contact service. I have a collecting story to share and a free upgrade offer for you.

Happy Collecting!

There is another option, that is to post such a set as a mint set in the competitive registry. The advantage to this is that you get the points assigned to those coins. The disadvantage is that completing such a set is a daunting task as the set also lists all the gold issues and mints. The advantage of the custom side is that you define the parameters to determine what a complete set looks like. Of course the beauty is that Tom7422 could post the set on both sides of the registry! Here's a link to the 1876 mint sets:

I like the spirit and simplicity of Tom's custom centennial set more.

That full competitive set is quite a daunting endeavor for a collector to complete.

A single example from affordable types for the year in respectable grades is a fantastic alternative. I am just happy NGC offers this alternative ability for the community to collect, create, and share.

The ability to design your own custom sets is definitely one of the best "Collectors Society" features. There are some fantastic custom sets and I advise anyone that has not looked over them to spend some time doing so. I have set up several nice USA/Philippine custom sets all of which are fully illustrated and described. My Custom sets are:

“USA/Philippines Type Set (Expanded Edition)”: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=9238

“The United States Manila Mint”: https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=1113

“Philippine Pedigrees”: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=10670
