My feature Primitive Money for Tuesday April 17 is Siamese Bullet Money.

The bullet money of Siam were issued from 1824 to 1880.

To produce these bullets, the Siamese money-maker would take a round bar of either silver or gold. Then to make the several denominations, he would cut off chunks of various sizes from this bar and weigh them carefully. The ends of each piece were turned together so that the finished money was almoust round - very much like a real bullet.

Bullet money was valued in ticals. The denominations of the silver bullets ranged from the tiney 1/64th tical to 8 ticals.

Gold bullet money was made in the same way and in denominations of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 ticals.

The specimen pictured is a silver 1 Tical Bullet that I purchased in the early 1960's. It has a weight of 15 grams and is about .5 inch in diameter.
