a coin from the large collection i have just purchaced

 

? how can you tell if this is the proof or has just been well cleaned

Dooly, from what I understand the proof coins were struck on copper nickel planchets and were only trial strikes. There are only 4 known. There are 1951 proof coins but they have the coat of arms reverse.

 

As for your coin, with the marks across the bust and the shiny reverse, it looks very cleaned to me.
