25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set Grading Census

I was wondering if people with (already returned) submitted sets from NGC want to comment on the ratio of 68 / 69 / 70 graded sets out of say a full mint box of 5 sets so we can build a census as to how many MS / PF 70 sets are in a 5 set box if any.

 

It seems to me by watching E-bay that there are a lot more 70 sets for sale than 69 sets and i have not seen one 68 at all not even as a single.

There has been a 68 posted here somewhere. I cant remember which coin out of the set it was.. but yes, there is atleast 1.

From what I have seen people posting on here, about 75% to 90% (per order submitted on average so far) of the coins submitted for the 25th anniv. set have come back as MS/PF 70. So far from the postings on this site, the lowest percentage of 70's per order submitted has been around 50%.

 

There are several postings thoughout the forums about the grades people have been receiving.

I received two perfect sets out of 5. 1 set all 69's, 1 set with 3 70's and 2 - 69's and 1 set 4 - 69's and 1 - 70

One set graded today. The important ones did well. Now looking for two 70's to replace the two 69's listed below in blue label ER. If anyone interested in a swap with cash or just a sale for the two let me know. Set was mailed to NGC via USPS from Tucson on 11/10 at 1130am registered mail and graded today 11/30/11 on the web site results. The shipping date just came in, Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 4:18 PM. Grading results such as these are the "norm" so far. Many others have been receiving back large amounts of MS/PF 70's

 

25th Anniv. ASE Grading results

 

I dont expect these sets to hold a high value. In fact, Chattanooga Coin is offering a set that has both 20th and 25th Anniv. ASE sets (all graded MS/PF 70) for just over $4200.

OK there was one complaint. Using the verification page to view the coins I noticed that for some reason NGC slabbed my set in the regular brown label instead of the 25th Anniversary Set blue label. I contacted NGC and they acknowledged the error. They told me to ship the coins back and they'll swap out for the blue label on my set at no cost to me.

My return from NGC was...two 70 sets....one 69 set...and 2 set of mixed 69s and 70s with one coin a 68. That 68 stung a bit..it was a reverse proof!

I got mine back Wednesday. 16 70's & 9 69's. Intreresting though - all of my bullion coins came back as MS 70, but 2 of them probably shouldn't be, IMO. One has a big ding on Ms. Liberty's neck & the other has a scratch leading to a deep pit in the middle of a fold line on Ms. Liberty's dress.

Scuba, maybe NGC considered them minor planchet defects, and as such, decided to either not ding the coin, and also not designate it as a mint error.

 

In any case, I wouldn't be happy with that coin sitting in a 70 holder, I would submit for an appearance review, and see what reparations you could get.

Those are both common strike-thru errors, which do not affect the grade. They are too small to be labeled as errors, however.

NO NO NO.. im not pushing blame on NGC.. just my crappy luck.... and the MINT.. who minted this coins, set a low mintage and then produced .. that is who my anger is at.. I have a crappy track record sending coins in to NGC.. i had my hopes up for 1 perfect set.. especially after seeing how some folks had 3 out of 5 or better.. once again, not mad at NGC.. just the mint at this point.
