My first OGH

5 posts in this topic

It lives up to the grade

I have read several posts on here about the Old Green Holders from PCGS (often abbreviated as OGH). I didn't have any of these in my collection until today. I found a nice example of the Stone Mountain Memorial 1925 Half Dollar about a week ago. I've been watching several of these sell in auctions, and have seen a few with even unsightly "toning" still bring a pretty nice price.

According to Krause, this commemorative has a total mintage of 1,314,709 and it is readily available in grades MS60 to MS65. The obverse of the coin features Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on horseback, while the reverse features a very nice image of an eagle on a rock. While not particularly scarce, this is a nice addition to my horse themed set, and is also my first OGH in my collection. Below you will see the obverse (featured largely), reverse (smaller), and the OGH label.

Cheers!

Brandon, I love your photographs, so much so that my next post will contain a photo very much like the ones you are posting. They say imitation is the highest compliment, or is it flattery, I can't remember which. At the bare minimum your photos have caused me to step it up a bit. After hours of fooling around with Photoshop Elements and Picasa, I finally got it down. All the best!

Thanks Gary. I'm glad you like them. I think I'm settled on this "larger horse/smaller other side" design for my horse themed custom-set. It will take some work to get them all re-photographed and composed, but it is worth it.

And THANK YOU for your feedback, encouragement, and inspiration. I can't tell you how many times I have watched the slideshow of your "Inspirational Ladies" set.

Very nice!

You may want to be wary of using "OGH". Any more, it is often derisively used to mean "OverGraded Holder". So many of the old holders that had nice coins have been cracked that the relative population of overgraded coins in those holders has risen tremendously in the last ten years.

Many now use the term "green label holder".
