for cherrypicking ddo's, rpm's, etc. anyone familiar with these? are there better books out there?

Those are the best books for varieties, as that area is typically the main focus of Kevin's books. For a general overview of the coins by date and mint, including rarity issues and some limited varieties, you should also look at the books written by the late Dave Lawrence. These are out of print and a bit hard to find, but they are now viewable online at stella.com
