20C For The Weekend

I always loved this series. A few years ago I learned a tough lesson from some coin doctor.

I bought an old ANACS-slabbed 1875-S 20c piece, MS60. It failed to cross for questionable color.

Frustrated, I cracked it and gave it an acetone dip. Huh? All the toning came off! But wait...acetone doesn't affect toning. Unless it's artificial toning, organic.

I ended up with a somewhat stained, rather lifeless coin. I set it aside, hoping over time it would tone naturally. But eventually gave up and told my local B&M about it. He patiently listened to my dumb story and then offered me more than I originally paid. Hmm.

Lance.

P.S. It didn't look MS after the dip to either of us.
