Tory Penny

Tory- refering to the British occupation and native colonial sympathizers to the royal British crown during the American colonial period.

 

Tory Penny- British minted pennies circulating with the colonies pre and post US revolutionary period. Those coins were very large. In addition, British merchant issued pennies circulating at the same period.

The odd thing is that the "Tories" hadn't issued a penny in ages, probably over a hundred years. (I'm not too sure when the last silver penny was struck but I believe it was in the 1600's. The first copper penny wasn't struck until 1797, well after the rebel and tory period here.) The Tory "penny" would actually be a half penny.
