1829 Bust Half -- Thoughts?

I hate to disagree with James but I would go a notch higher in details: VF25-30. It has been harshly cleaned which has amplified the chatter on the coin.

This bust half most certainly appears to have been cleaned at some point?

Any thoughts on a technical grade? Thanks!

Jeff

PCGS would grade this XF40 or 45 if it weren't cleaned. The coin has not been worn down to the VF grade range. It has weakness at the bust line and on the cap as a result of weak strike that is typical of coins struck from some of the 1829 hub sub-types.

Bust halves should never be graded according to detail, but rather by a measurment of the actual wear and remaining luster, which is usually easy to detect as a dull, lackluster discoloration on the high points. Conversely, shinny high points on an uncleaned coin are the result of weak strike or cabinet/coin-to-coin friction.
