Please grade my grading - 1857 large cent

I am new at this and would appreciate your comments. I think it is an unusual wear pattern. The usual points of wear look good - but the reverse legend is worn around "OF AMERICA". My grade: EF40.

My guess is that you better act fast or it will be "EF Details-Environmental Damage".

Is that actually wear or just a weak strike? The denticles have a similar appearance. Yes, I see the green slime, too!

The green slime looks like Verdigris which is common on old copper.

I think the coin is gradable at XF 40 .

BB in my mind, I would be a bit hesitant on a 40, and would say more like VF-35 details.

VF-30 sharpness, net graded to VF-20 because of minor corrosion on the reverse.

 

With all due respect to those voted EF-40 or close to that, this is a COMMERCIAL EF-40. This is "bargain" EF-40 that "big ad" dealers in "Coin World" sell you at a reduced EF-40 price. In reality you are getting a VF coin at an inflated price.

 

Here are two large cents that are true EF-40 to 45 coins.

Bill , his photo was a bit blurry - I still think the coin has enough detail for Xf 40 , although that would be the absolute high end . Perhaps Vf 35 would be a more accurate guess.

I would give a commercial grade of VF-30 or so.
