If the coin fairy godmother...

9 posts in this topic

I'm interested to find out what floats people's boats. After residing on these boards for years I can obviously guess what a variety of people are going to say, but that is why I'm adding these various categories... to try and get a feel for people's broader interests.

Here's the basic scenario, the coin fairy godmother is going to give you 1 (different price wise) coin on 5 successive days. The first coin MUST have a value of $50 or less (assume either graysheet ask value or PCGS price guide value, whichever you feel is more realistic, for all 5 coins). The second coin MUST have a value of $100 or less; the 3rd coin MUST have a value of $500 or less; the 4th coin MUST have a value of $1,000 or less; and the 5th coin MUST have a value of $5,000 or less. Given that the VAST majority of collector coins are within the above price range there should be some nice coin mixes. You can, of course, get all 5 coins in one series if that is your wish, just as long as they each fall within the price guidelines.

Here are some coins that I would enjoy having the coin fairy godmother give me...

<$50 1924 Peace dollar in MS64.

<$100 1909 Lincoln VDB in MS64.

<$500 1859 O Liberty Seated (no motto) 50c in XF.

<$1,000 a NICELY toned (I'm basically assuming at least doubling the cost here) 1920 Maine commem. in MS65.

<$5,000 1858 1c FE (small letter) in MS65.

So, what would you like the CFG to give you???

$50 = A bright, spot-free, uncirculated Tonkin 1/600 Piastre. These are available, but hard to find spot free.

$100 = A mid-UNC 19th century shilling.

$500 = CBH - date of the fairy godmother's choice. Gem cameo EF-40+ circulated with flawless battleship grey surfaces, lighter highpoints, preferrably R-4+.

$1000 = This is the one I want the most: 1952S NGC MS-65FBL, incredibly strong strike, flawless surfaces, brilliant luster, and an all around PQ+ coin.

$5000 = Either a gorgeous 1815/2, or a hammered, attractive 1953S NGC MS-63+ FBL. I would probably prefer the 1953S, but would not be opposed to the CBH.

Enjoy wouldn't quite fit the bill for my state of mind should FGM drop these beauties off at my house. Euphoric might become my condition.

When is she bringing them, I mean what time?

For less than $50, I oculd probably get a South Africa raw QEII cameo proof or mS-65 circulation strike that I could then submit for grading which would then be worth a lot more.

For less than $100, any number of South Africa mint state raw KGVI or NGC AU-58 KGV issues.

For less than $500, a raw South Africa mint state KGV or a mint state Spanish colonial "Lion & Castle" 1/4 real. (The latter is the same coin as my avatar at the moment.)

For less than $1,000, a mint state Spnish cross 1R or 2R.

For less than $5,000, I could have any number of mint state pillar issues from Mexico, Peru, Bolivia or Guatemala - assuming they were actually available.

Sky asked the same question ATS and not a single response, apparently they do not believe in the Fairy Godmother there.

Maybe if you used someone else, like maybe the Roaming Gnome.
