Please help me identify this Roman coin

3 posts in this topic

I think this may be a sestertius dated 24BC.

Diameter: 35mm Thickness: 3mm

Metal: Copper Alloy? The coin looks of a much lighter less coppery tone than the scans. My scanner seems to be making dark scans these days Scanned at 1200 dpi.

Inscription on side with large SC (may not be accurate)

Inscription on side with seated figure

Well, this was a tough one. Took me about an hour to finally pin it down. I believe I have ID'd it correct, and its a fairly scarce coin. I'm not big on cleaning or conservation of coins, but I'd highly recommend you send that coin off to NCS to have it conserved. It would really add to its value.

Thanks so much for your information. I have spent quite some time on it myself. The research was very interesting. I will consider conserving it.

I will check out the webpages you have listed.

My husband inherited 5 Roman coins with his Dad's coin collection. I thought I would post them on the forum one at a time to ID them. This was the most easy to read the inscriptions on.

Thanks again
