Let's get started....so I am in Arizona on business

and I was givin the afternoon off so I headed up to Sedona. While up there I did some shopping for the kids (toys & Jewlery) and as an after thought I enquired about any coins they may have in town. The lady behind the counter of a kids clothing store told me about a coin/antique shop about 20 miles from Sedona in the sleepy little town of Cottonwood! I had to hurry as it was about 4:30pm and I was pretty sure the shop would close around 5:00pm. I arrived at Backstreet Antiques at around 4:45pm...do the math.....I was flying lol

I walked in and I saw plenty of antiques and 3 glass cases that made up the stores counter. Two of the cases were full of the usual antique :sumo:...but the one in the middle had 3 of the felt trays with coins in 2X2's. Below the trays were piles of Morgans & Peace dollars, Barber Halves, and Barber quarters. All were circulated but some of the Morgans looked like sliders. I think he was asking $18 a peace for the Morgans and Peace dollars...not sure what he was asking for the Barber's.

Anyway...I was on a hunt for toners and so I rummaged through a small box of misc coins on the counter which was full of all sorts of coins in 2X2's There were a few Lincoln cent toners for .25 cents a piece and a few Roosevelt toners for a couple bucks a piece so I grabbed them....but there wasn't much else. I asked the nice gentlemen behind the counter if he had any nicely toned colorful coins.....he was gracious but didn't have a clue what I was talking about... (shrug)

Here's the pitch.....strike one for the toning weenie :screwy:

Next I asked if he had any older mint sets or proof sets with toning.....he pulled out a box but all he had was like 80's and newer Mint/Proof sets.....I didn't feel they were worth looking through as I know what you typically find in the way of hazy color and....he was about to close so time was running out...

Strike two for the toning weenie.... doh!

Lastly I asked if he had anything not in the display case.....he said he had several small boxes with Morgans in 2X2's......and he added there may be some toned coins??? I start to salivate as I can just see me pulling out a rainbow toned end roller that would require sunglasses when viewed under light. I quickly make my way through about two dozen Morgans.....most are blast white but a few have a small amount of peripheral toning including a descent 1879-P....that was MS63...maybe MS64 at best.....at $55 I passed as the color wasn't worth a premium and I just wasn't getting to excited about the coin... hm

THEN it happend.....I came to the end of the box and BAM :applause:

that was it...I came to the end of the box

That's right ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls.....the mighty Krypto had struck out :sorry:

Now what kind of a story would this be if I left empty handed.....soooooooooo

I decided to look through the trays he had and it was the usual supects.....circulated wheaties, worn out Seated material, one 3 cent silver....one 3 cent nickel...a sheild Nickel.....one Merc dime.......as my eyes start to glaze over at the thought of the wasted trip and yet another treasure hunt that ended in failure I was drawn to a coin...................a bust coin.............a small drapped bust coin........could it be a coin I have wanted for about 15 years but never seen to find in problem free lower grades......no can't be :o

I point aimlessly into the case....not a word is spoken......heck I couldn't speak right then.......is the reverse going to look like someone took a grinder to it...? As I viewed the coin in hand for the first time and flipped it over......one word escaped my lips....NICE>>>>>>>>>> :applause:

Not I am realizing I don't have much cash on me.....please....please let him take Visa..........sir....I said as quite as a mouse...do you take Visa......he looked at my little stack of coins and started to say no and then I threw the other coin on top....and he said sure since it was a lot more money than my meager little stack. I paid....exchanged some pleasentries about maybe coming back in 3 weeks since I have to come out to Scottsdale again the 3rd week of September...then I was off......coins in shirt pocket.

I think the drive back to Scottdale took about 5 minutes....when actually it took about an hour and a half.....I just sat there thinking about my little Diamond found in the middle of nowhere. :cloud9:

Oh and I was able to attribute my little 1800 Drapped Bust Dime via Heritage auction archives since there are only two known die varieties.....it;s the rarer of the two...J2 R-5

:headbang:

Great pick up and way to go on being so diligent and patient searching. I have had a similar experience at a small local coin shop in the middle of nowhere West Texas.

That is a beautiful coin! It's probably an unevenly struck (on the rims, which is typical of these dimes) VG8, but will likely certify to AG3. You can't ask for a better looking example of the grade...I hope you got a good price on it!

I paid $250 for it and didn't bat an eye as it was priced at $300 on the 2X2.....I knew that it was tough to find these little buggers with some meat still left on the bones.....it would have been nice if the obverse would have had matching wear as the reverse but it's hard to complain about it as I really love the coin :cloud9:

Very good, suspenseful story. I thought it was going to be a disappointment, then you got my hopes up with the Morgan 2x2s, but alas. And then, it was all worth it in the end. Very nice coin, congrats on the find.

Nice find! Kryptonitecomics, I live in arizona. I visited sedona, and I'm not sure where it is, but there is a VERY good steakhouse in sedona, they are at like a mall type place, very expensive, and they serve rattlesnake too. I'll have to try and find the name of the place.

Sure it is, its the multi-shaded gray of an unmessed with circulated 200 year old silver coin! The colors are perfect.

Lovely coin. I'm very envious.

Shane, I knew what you meant - a very surprising find. It just wasn't apparent from the thread title. :baiting: I'm happy for you that you were pleasantly shocked. (thumbs u

I was putting on my sunglasses as I was patiently reading the read, as I was expecting a nuclear toned morgan! Not my area of expertise, but it is appealing and about 100 years older than a morgan! Congrats

By far way better that a "Guess the Grade" thread...not that they are bad, but this thread has suspense, pictures, emocons, paragraphs, statements & questions all rolled into one!

For those expecting toners....I won't dissapoint as I will post some new purchases in the Newps section....I think you will get your fill of color then
