1956 Franklin

7 posts in this topic

Well...I like going into the local pawn store to see what coins they have for sale. I seen a 1956 proof set.....the dime, quarter, and half dollar all looked to have cameo and the penny was borderline and of coarse the nickel was toning blue. I thought this would be a great idea to send the coins in and get graded.

Well my coins made it to quality control today and I found out my franklin was a Type 1.

I looked at the price guide and noticed that the type 1 seems to be the rarer one.

I think my Franklin will grade PF-66 or 67 cameo!! I will post the grades when I get them.

I paid $58.30 for the proof set and all I was looking for cameo coins and didn't know at the time there was different types of half-dollars.

What is the difference of 1956, 1956 Type 1,1956 Type 2?

Look at the feathers of the eagle on the reverse. The Type 1 has 4 feathers to the left of the perch and doesn't APPEAR to be as well struck (although it is fully struck). The Type 2 has 3 feathers to the left of the perch and appears more boldly struck.

Congrats on the pickup!

In cameo, that coin would be very rare, although for some reason they seem to be much more loose on the type 1 than the type 2. I've seen some recent examples that I've been very disappointed in. And, believe it or not, recently from what I've seen, NGC is tougher on the type 1 cams versus PCGS. I've love to see pics though!

Here's a good example of one from Teletrade, reverse is stronger than the obverse, this is pretty standard for the type 1 when it is a cameo.

A PCGS one, although I suspect that the coin is actually nicer in hand, the mirrors appear to be soft in nature.

This pic shows the pronounced weakness of the eagle as compared to how well the rest of the coin is struck and the reverse is actually a dcam.

Just a few examples for you to enjoy.

I was going to post closeups but ldhair beat me to it. The Type 1 is the design used up until 1956 when the more detailed eagle was put into production. Both types were produced in '56 and only the Type 2 after that.
