Scanned upside down and the right way up..

Even my scans do not show how shiny the obverse is

What should i do about this Ask for my money back or is it my fault and i will have to bite the bullet on this one (shrug)

Cheers for the help

If the seller has a return policy...I would send it back. The sellers images make the coin look like a lusterous MS...High AU coin......your cans make it look like a paper weight hm

Dooly,

I pray you can return that piece of junk. The harsh cleaning was hidden by the pics the seller offered-so ebay or paypal would help you with a problem returning it. Here's one that sold a month ago on Heritage-ANACS MS61 for 86 pounds($172 US). For what you paid you could have gotten a fantastic coin. Please return it-NOT your fault.

Jim

I would ask the seller if a return is possible, but the auction did not state any return policy. Also, the seller clearly showed that the coin was AU, encouraged bidders to ask questions, gave the option of receiving additional images and the images provided really aren't that bad so I do not think you could get PayPal to side with you on a significantly not as described dispute.

cheers for the comments..

hear is a draft of my mail to the seller..

Hi there.. thanks for the coin i received it today. Your images make the coin look like a lustrous MS...High AU coin hence the price i was willing to pay for the coin but when i have received the coin there is evidence that the coin has been cleaned and there is non of the golden tone shown in your pictures.. i have sent images to Ex- NGC graded and specialists in this series and all have confirmed my opinions of the cleaning of this coin.. (As a NGC member myself i would not make claims before talking to them ) I am not saying that it is not a nice coin it has good details and i would have been glad to add it to my collection but as the cleaning has been so harshly done the value has been dramatically reduced on it.. i am sorry to send this mail as it is the first complaint i have had to make and i do not wish you to think i have had buyers remorse or that i am a eBay timewaster as i loathe the types and which i have had a few over my last sales and i know how unreasonable they can be Thanks very much for your time and i hope we can come to a resolution to this problem in an amicable way .. all the best lolscoins

(shrug) am i being to nice hm

Dooly if I recieved that message I would take it back. With that said I believe it is all about what kind of a person the seller is. If he is someone who cares about his customer satisfaction , or if he is just out to make a buck.

Doug, I think a big part of the problem is that you gambled on a coin based on poor pictures and no written return policy. In the future, I would recommend only buying coins with a stated return policy and/or clear photos. Would a nice seller take the coin back? Yes. Do I think you're entitled to have the seller deal with the consequences of a gamble that you made and lost at? Not really. Sorry, but that's my opinion. hm I hope you get the refund, though, because you're a nice fellow :)

Another thought is that your scans might not be representing what (if any) luster the coin had. Scans are very poor ways to show off a coin compared to photos. I don't really see any hairlines, though it may indeed be dipped to death. The cruddy spotting on an otherwise clean field (reverse) makes me think so.

Additionally, after reviewing the auction, I would have never bid on this coin in the first place after seeing this ridiculous photo, showing the coin resting on the fingers of the seller. When I see photos like that, I don't even bother to continue looking at the coin - I 'walk out'.

To me, the coin looks like a golden colored AU example in the seller's images and a color-free AU one in the new photos. Apparently I'm in the minority, but don't feel that the listing was one which merits a return.

I'm leaning toward agreeing with Mark. The sellers pics look like they have a typical white balance problem. I see a lot of coins on ebay with that color and I think most of them are basically white coins. The sellers pics look like a nice high end AU coin. Some rub is visible that takes it out of the MS range.

Your scans don't reveal any real problems to me either. Scans hide luster so I can't tell much about that, but you have the coin in hand so you have to tell us what the luster and surfaces look like. Sure, I think you paid too much, but it looks to me like you got what was advertised.

Who comprises this chorus of experts that believe the coin is cleaned? Your scans do not indicate that the coin was cleaned to me.

Hi all .. thanks for all the interesting comments hm Oh! how things can change..

What a nice lady the seller is or maybe she just liked a polite message from me.. (yes it was edited)

her response:-

Dear Loscoins I can assure you I had no intention of misleading anyone with this coin. I agree the coin although high grade does not have the same tone as the photo would indicate I also prefer to see coins in their raw state (sadly the US market likes cleaned coins) I never clean coins myself. I am more than happy to come to an agreement over this one I try to avoid grading unless I am 100% certain of the grade Let me know what you would like to do Sally

:headbang:

shame they are not all like this Eh!

IMO, you way over bid this coin. The golden color on the photographs is not uncommon for inexperience photographers and the photo's do show what could be considered rub. AU58 Tops with a generopus price guide value of 125 US?

Hopefully, your seller will give you the return you want and you can move on with this lesson in your pocket.

I looked at your original thread and Mr. Feld as well as others advised you that the coin was AU55-AU58. Why the generous bid?

The world has gone crazy. Heritage has a bunch of AU55/58, 1917-P, Type 1, SLQ's today at auction that are up to $100. above retail without the 15% added.

Sounds like you got it handled, Dooly, with such an understanding, straightforward seller. Hope you get it refunded and take the money and buy each of us one and split the rest. lol
