Is the recent tightening of the TPGs a result of the CAC?

I've heard of (but not experienced first-hand) a recent tightening of grading standards at both PCGS and NGC.

Do you think this recent tightening is a result of the CAC announcement and opening for business on 9/1, is this just part of the natural ebb and flow of grading standards, or is this tightening just a figment of my imagination and/or an internet rumor?

Please vote and discuss if you so choose...Mike

I have seen no evidence of their tightening-I will be sending 5 coins within the week so in about a month I'll have some basis to make a decision however small the evidence.

I think that the CAC is contributory, but I believe that the reasons for the CAC being created are probably a greater factor. Look through a box of coins in a Heritage Signature auction, and you will see what I mean.

Mike---- Can't say that I think that PCGS or NGC has tightened up. Have had recent submissions to both----and felt the grades were what I expected. Where I noticed a difference was with ANACS. I submitted 16 coins to them recently. My first submission to them since they moved to Texas. Felt that their grades were pretty much 'right on'----actually just about how I felt about the coins. Found this to be quite surprising ----and good for the hobby. Don't know who they have grading for them now. But was pleasantly surprised. Bob [supertooth]

Everyone has their opinion of grading services and their grading standards. I can't see how CAC would have influenced TPG grading as they haven't opened their doors yet and very possibly may fold before xmas.

Just how is CAC more qualified to grade coins, let alone render some opinion as to the coin's desirablilty, than PCGS or NGC anyway? Its like saying that Montana State is going to join Conference USA and really kick butt and win the conference championship! You gotta be kidding me! The roster of CAC is in the same league as PCGS or NGC? ROFLMAO!

Just saving still another silly post of Parker's, and I'm being very nice by calling it that.

Well, you know Mark, Parker does have a point. CAC *may* fold before Christmas, but then again, Parker *may* someday actually get a clue. What *are* the odds? lol

I agree. It's the latest in a chain of contributors.

I recently (past month) submitted to and received back from NGC 35 modern coins and saw no significant indication of tightening. However, it's certainly possible such tightening exists but is concentrated outside the modern segment.

Sorry - but I am not going to put my money on the Montana State of TPG surveyors of coins. Nor do I have to copy other people's posts in order to have something to say.

I see it all the time, the huge lack of professionalism of people on the bourse who don't even have a real job (or succssful business) and then believe they can bash other delaers or someone like David Hall or one of the major TPG's. You can't argue with a crazy though and I just try to see if there is a money making angle with them. Over across the street there are (or were) a lot of nutcases, but one in particular I made good some money from their stuff - how sweet it is.

I wish you the best of luck with CAC Mark, especially if it provides you something gainful to do. But lets keep our facts straight: CAC has not even teed this thing off - lets see what they actually do on the playing field or how financially viable to their customers their service really is.

Convince me CAC is going to help my bottom line. I will believe they are having an impact on the major TPG's when I see it. Frankly, I believe the major 4 - NGC, PCGS, ICG, ANACS are doing a fine enough job and don't see a need for CAC from my particular business perspective.

I like the customer service, integrigity, and quality product of NGC and for a number of reasons they are my grading service of choice.

The mission of the CAC is not to help your bottom line.

If your ebay inventory reflects the coins you buy/sell, the CAC should be a non-event for you.

Then I have no use for CAC and certainly not for you.

I haven’t followed Montana State football. Are they very good?

Ooooooooooooooooooh! You hurt my feelings.

No worries. I don't buy/sell garbage from/to wannabe bottom-feeders.

Frankly, I have no interest in trying to convince you or anyone else that CAC is for you/them. CAC will speak for itself once operations are under way and people should choose for themselves whether they wish to submit to CAC and/or buy CAC coins. The only thing I do try to convince people of from time to time is to quit bashing an entity and making personal attacks, without having all of the facts and without personally knowing the participants involved.

Parker, Thank you for sharing your thoughts, but as has become all to frequent in your posts, I don't think you are being fair. Specifically...

CAC has not even teed this thing off - lets see what they actually do on the playing field or how financially viable to their customers their service really is.

If you truly believe what you write, why hasn't the above stopped you from repeatedly bashing them, particularly if, as you have said, they haven't started operation and you don't even know who John Albanese is?

Hypocritically yours...Mike

I didn't read any of the response posts, but wanted to contribute a tidbit of subjective (my bias) information before I do. As many of you know, I'm doing some contract work describing auction lots. One consignor had his near-complete collection of high-grade Morgans certified lock, stock and barrel (at NGC of course, the preferred grading service of enlightened collectors ). In other words, it's a pretty good population of coins from a pretty good series to grade.

NGC's grading was very accurate and consistent, in my opinion, and just a hair on the conservative side. I am very pleased with how this collection was graded, and could not disagree with a single assessment.

Further, there were two coins bodybagged for cleaning. The cleaning was extraordinarily difficult to catch - in both cases, on the reverse. I've always thought I was pretty good at catching cleaned coins, but honestly, these two would have slipped by me. I almost though they were a bit too persnickety, but the point is, they were very tight in this regard.

One caveat: this is a collection of essentially white coins (no toners). So, I have no data to judge whether they're doing a better job of rejecting AT coins.

The fact of the matter is that the perception of how tight or loose is just that a perception. I've really never noticed any "movement" either way. I still see a lot of overgraded coins in holders (undergraded not so much due to the obvious cherry picking) and much garbage (not the TPG's fault of course) in auctions or at the bourse. Not much has changed. Let's face it people, most coins (except probably moderns) are just crappy. It is DIFFICULT to find nice coins. Period. So if a crappy coin is over (or under) graded means little. Who cares?

As to CAC: I have no clue. Since I haven't read all that much about them nor have they even started I can't see how they could influence anyone at this point. (shrug)

Edit: Oh yeah, thanks James for that direct contact input...information as such should benefit the collector overall.

So is Montana State going far this year or what?

They are well thought of in their city of Billings, MT and they may may perform well in their particular league, but they would get stomped by a Conf USA school like UH. I like Billings and its casinos - a nice area. They also have a neat coin shop - highly recommend.

Recently while visiting Billings, I went to a club there called Planet Lockwood which has a bar, casino, and strip club (the only SC in town). I won $125 playing video poker, spent $50 at the SC (my other hobby), and then $75 at the coin shop which is nearby in the downtown area. Not a bad afternoon. Since then I have stayed away from Planet Lockwood (not as good as the SC's in Houston) and played at the casino (it is joined by a liquor store / souvenir shop which shares a strip mall with Subway Sandwiches) next to my hotel (they bring you free drinks in the casino!).

Yes, I am a wannabe who does widgets and laugh at some of you guys on my way thru the Jack in the Box drivethru - you won't catch me buying a $5000 numismatic coin and then having to hire someone (even though its slabbed) to tell me if its nice or not lol.

I know of something a lot more fun to spend that kinda money on.......OK - have fun with your coins!
