1856 large cent question(no pict)

3 posts in this topic

An 1856 large cent we have has the 5 slanted in the date. None of the coin price guides I have has a price for this coin. What's the price range for this coin and what percentage of the mintage have a slat 5? Thanks for any info.

One grading company's population report shows a total of 654 1856 Upright 5's for all grades combined, compared to 200 for the Slanted 5's. However, I believe that in most cases there is no appreciable difference in value between the two varieties and currently own a PCGS MS65RB Slanted 5 which I bought and am offering at no premium.

Both the slanted and upright 5 coins come in multiple varieties. Both kinds are common and there is no premium for the type of 5, but there is for certain varieties.
