What do you think of this 1916D dime

I don't remember all the diagnostics but this is one coin I wouldn't buy uncertified.

 

Thats one coin i could not afford certified !!! lol

If I remember right, aren't there like 4 die pairs used in legitimate 16-Ds?

 

Yes, that's right. There were four reverse dies used. The same mint mark punch was used on all four, but the placement of the mintmark is slightly different on each.

 

Here are three things common to all four varieties (and the pictures above will be helpful to illustrate these points):

 

1. The inside hole in the "D" is shaped like a triangle.

 

2. The top and bottom of the "D" are parallel with the arms of the "E."

 

3. The top serif of the "D" is never lower than the tip of the leaf it points to.

Do you think this coin is realy a 16d or not .. is there any other way of telling apart from the mint mark ?

 

It just looks wrong - verdigris at that same area is not too good either - I think it has been altered.

 

Here is my certified coin .. Yes its a "D" hiding in there :)
