  1. You are mistaking lack of detail in the pics for wear. When grading Unc morgans you need to be looking for scratches and rubs in the luster.

Check out my Morgan here, Sorry that my picture is not quite as good as his.

You can see the rubs in the luster on the cheek and some tics in the field to the left of lady Liberty and a light scratch under her chin. These are marks from being in contact with other coins. These marks probably take mine down to a MS64 or MS63.

Also notice the flatness above liberties ear on my coin. This is from a weak strike and is not a product of wear.

His displays none of these marks or very few of them. That is what makes it a MS66.

  2. Here's one I just won today!!Cheap too.

    Very nice looking coin !

I am very much still learning about everything since recently coming into a few hundred of these Morgans.

..Question , ..I had pretty much determined that the one's that I have that had potential for grading (best condition) were the one's where there was not much , if any , wear toward the top of the hair area and had a great deal of detail. However , it seems that this one has some wear in this area and still received a 66! Don't get me wrong. This looks like great news , however , am I missing something important ?

    Thank you !

    Hey Brian,

Whatever you are seeing,it sure isn't any kind of wear from handling. There may be a few rub marks from the coin contacting other coins. Can you be more specific as to what you are looking at? Here are even closer shots. of the coin.

Thank you , and yes , I have seen some coins and have some that have more hairline details at the front top portion of her forehead. Where the hair starts at the top of her forehead going over to the right , say 1/2 an inch , it appears that some of the hair detail is worn a bit ? If that's OK for a 66 , that's great w/ me .

    Thanks !
