  1. The thing is, it was not a high value coin. It did not get any special attention. It was a $50 coin. A data entry error turned it into something very different.

Screw-ups like this are not excusable. We pay hefty fees and expect perfection. But humans are involved and mistakes happen. All services make them. 99.9% accuracy would mean thousands of errors every year.

What matters is how the services deal with mistakes, not whether they happen.

  2. I too am very disappointed. It is sad to see the demise of the one place where all top-tier-graded coins can be assembled and ranked against one another.

This was the beauty of NGC's registry design. It encouraged collectors to buy the coin regardless of TPG. And it lent a sense that NGC cared more about the coins and having a relevant registry and less about which brand housed them. It was righteous. Unselfish. Collectors valued and appreciated the NGC registry flexibility.

Now we are left with two disparate systems. Collectors must decide which direction they're going. Some will choose and cross coins. But my guess is many will simply stop playing and that's bad for NGC and bad for the hobby.

My NGC registry sets consist of either all NGC or all PCGS coins. I like set consistency. Maybe I'm not harmed as much as some (very sorry, Bill!). I too have gone to great effort to photograph every coin and document variety types, die marriages and offer a bit of history about most of them. I tried to contribute to the enjoyment of studying and collecting the series.

I guess I will take down my sets because they will soon be out of date and it is clear they are no longer welcome.

Yes, it's NGC's business and I respect their right to make decisions like this. It's just disappointing.

  3. It was Secure Plus graded like this in 2010.

The strike is actually quite good as is the die state for a mid-20s Denver coin. I always though the tiny pin scratch in front of the nose and ear caused the 63 grade.

That maybe true also but look really close at the beard. One other thing is CAC has been tough on every 26 I have sent in regardless of the mint it took 4 26s s before one passed and I have not been able to get a d or a plain pass yet.

I guess I'm in another camp. To me the beard looks terrific for a mid-20's mintmarked cent.

Here are some other decent strikes of that era at branch mints. How about that beard?

  4. Great cwt's with super pictures.

Lance that is a wonderful tough date there. Why did you struggle with your purchase on that one? I'm guessing it's a 65 rb?

    I should have been clearer.

I struggled to find one I liked. It is a tough date. And I ran across many I didn't like.

This one isn't perfect. But the color and luster is nice and the surfaces aren't bad.

You are right! 65RB. Smart folks around here.

    Lance.
