icg has a holder with an intercept shield gasket. consequently there is a possible advantage for toned coins to sit in their holder. another example of where it is possibly advantageous to leave a coin in a non-pcgs non-ngc holder is that of redfield pedigrees, which lose both desirability and market value if they are cracked out (even if such pedigree is notated on a new slab).
the solution i believe is to have ngc affix the same tape that they do to gsa holders. unofficially, ngc was reluctant apparently because they are not gov't sealed. however, it would seem to me that if ngc is comfortable with assigning a definitive attribution based upon a coin residing in a paramount redfield holder, then they should similarly be comfortable taping it with an ngc-assigned grade. an alternate solution would be to have ngc manufacture a super-holder that actually contains the entire intact holder!
i personally think there would be an enormous market for non-gsa ngc-taped (or superholdered) products. it also would be a wonderful value-added service for the collectors and marketplace.
