Counterfeit El Cazador?

I purchased two El Cazador coins in NGC certified slabs to set for pendants. While setting the 2 real I noticed that the silver on the rim of the coin had chipped off exposing full metal underneath. Is this a common occurence or Is this a plated counterfeit?
