  1. Dear NGC Forum,

Finally got around to updating my "Competitive Sets". And I am noticing a discrepancy between what my profile states and the actual coin count.

    The profile States:

    2 Competitive Sets. (Correct).

    27 Competitive Coins (Correct).

When I look at the individual sets, the numbers DON'T match the profile.

My MS-65 Morgan Dollar Set - 4 coins. - Correct.

My Proof 70 Silver American Eagles  - 23 coins - If I select "Filled", It only displays 8 coins.

    Any Ideas or suggestions?

    Thank You

You don't want to spend these, as the silver in them has value that substantially exceeds their face value.  To determine this value, which changes daily, obtain the current spot price of silver per troy ounce from a site such as kitco.com and multiply by 0.18084 for a pre-1965 quarter, 0.07234 for a pre-1965 dime, or 0.36169 for a pre-1965 half dollar.  This morning's silver price is $19.56 per ounce, which yields a value of approximately $3.53 per unworn silver quarter.  There would be a slight discount due to weight loss from wear.  Coin or bullion dealers would pay somewhat less than the spot value but likely still over $3 per quarter at current silver values.

    Sandon,

Thank You for the mathematics lesson with Silver (Sincerely said).

Your numbers give me a good reference point that I didn't have specifics on.

    Once again.

    Thanks

  3. I have to agree with Morpheus......

Come up with a denomination-based breakdown of what you will be working with. At the same time "Maybe", depending on your understanding / research of coinage, Micro-manage the sortation within the denomination. If you look at it by dates you would be managing them into groups based on "Silver" or whatever metal content you would be working with.

After that gets completed. Take the one that you feel would be the lease overwhelming. Best way to get discouraged is trying to jump into something "Too Much". As you work on the smaller batches you can tweak how things get done, hopefully, find/develop some shortcuts/methodology that will make the progression to the larger batches easier.

    Hope this helps... Good Luck

  4. Collected coins as a kid, just as a hobby, really never thought about it until recently, from buying Investment grade coins.

The bulk of what I have as a kid are: The Lincoln Pennies in the Blue tri-fold books.

So, from that scenario comes my question.

How do you determine If a coin or coins / collection should be graded?

Majority are typical wear for year. Do I grade them? In hopes that the Grading as an overall exceeds the Expense of the grading.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
