  1. Slight collector value. Worth more as melt silver. (Agree - there no "S" on the obverse.)
  2. Ahhh...but Cromwell was a lawyer. As Shakespere wrote in the Fool’s riposte to the Earl of Kent in Act I, Scene 4 of King Lear: Earl of Kent: This is nothing, fool. Fool: Then ’tis like the breath of an unfeed lawyer – you give me nothing for't. Can you make no use of nothing, nuncle?
  3. Scammers are solidly outnumbered by "idiuts" who respond to them.
  4. Yeah, I'll miss the iguana catching contests, and roach races.
  5. Yes. Some things require considerable diversity of knowledge, experience and perspective to arrive at a satisfying decision. This is the core of by objection to TPG's unilaterally declaring a coin a "specimen" or "special proof" or "Wallaby excrement deluxe." No single TPG or other entity has all of this, and that situation ultimately degrades the trust and reliability of TPG decisions on unusual items.
  6. My opinions on certain numismatic items are known, or communicated on request, to any independent authentication entity, museum curator, author or other who might ask. In some situations where an organization has not asked, and has royally screwed up (thus misleading some) I will speak out including at the cost of getting banned or declared "PNG - persona non grata" by those caught by the truth. (My position on this likely hardened after working with Eric Newman and reviewing his papers and correspondence, and seeing the kinds of deception and lies perpetrated by so many "respected numismatists" of the day.) More directly to your comment -- Many ideas and much information is exchanged between myself and others. This is on the basis of mutual respect and appreciation of differences of interpretation. It is much like information exchange among scientists.
  7. This might be of interest to those going to the F.U.N. coin bourse. https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1068696/fun-cancellation-list
  8. New USPS motto under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy: "Duh..."
  9. Bulgaria and Romania are the main sources for ancient bronze coins. They are also centers for die-struck and cast fakes of the same coin-types....these are crudely aged to imperfection.
  10. What do you propose to "learn" from wasting money to have a common coin in common condition authenticated and graded? Will you learn self-deception? Will you learn wastefulness? If there were something useful to share, yes it wold be; but, here there is no "documented fact" of any value at all -- to anyone, except possibly yourself. You would learn more by spending the same amount of money to buy a couple of 1964 Kennedys that have already been graded, and on which someone else had already wasted money. Reality is a good teacher, but there is nothing to be gained by wasting your funds. You have a nice profit on the metal. Enjoy it.
  11. Soooo...the OP wants to spend (waste) $35 to $50 to have common Kennedy halves put into TPG slabs....?
  12. Thanks Alex and Dave. I'm looking for added information on the dies and if these were made to aid in testing NO Mint annealing problems, or were they simply use of older dies that were in good condition. The process was to fill the "CC," smooth, and then repunch with an "O" mintmark. If parts of the fill do not hold up, you get the partial results as on 1900 O/CC. (Same process as 1880/79, etc.)
  13. 1959 Production began January 2nd at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. At 9.35 A.M. - today - the 1959 Lincoln Cent - with the new reverse design - was struck - as we watched with excited pride and pleasure! Each one of us was handed a coin. We examined it - 'drooled' over its beauty - and smiled! Each one of us tossed our coin into the bin - the press started to roll - at the rate of 140 coins a minute; we smiled again - and returned to our desks! No coins of the old design were manufactured after December 31, 1958.
  14. Many in the hobby/business have seen "Omega" counterfeits. They are not from government dies. The old PCGS thread was kind of like "Head Cheese" - a mixture of scraps, inedible byproducts, and imagination.
  15. They charge a little more than here, but hey, it's only "CraptoCurrency" anyway....
  16. You'll likely get more specialized attention if you post the coin on VAMworld. This is the URL for the discussion forum. http://www.vamworld.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4&sid=fff5f66628982c25c19f7905cfcf0724
  17. The initial policy of selling patterns and proof coins was intended to suppress speculation. The same applied to small circulation mintages in the 1880s. That never worked. Changes to Mint Regulations dated October 10, 1887 were generally effective at suppressing pattern piece sales. (1896 and 1907 being the primary exceptions.) Here's the most active section of revised regulations: 4. Experimental pieces of proposed designs or of new coins for the official use of the Director of the Mint under Section 3510 R.S., and on his written requisition, shall be struck in such metal or alloy only, and of such weight and fineness, as prescribed by law for coins of the same denomination. Such experimental pieces will be receipted for by the Director, and if not adopted for regular coinage during the same year, shall be defaced by him as soon as the use is subserved for which they were struck, and forthwith returned to the superintendent, who shall cause them to be melted in his presence, and that of the melter and refiner, when both of these officers shall join in a written statement to that effect, which statement, to be sent to the Director of the Mint, shall be a voucher to the Director of the Mint, and so put upon record in the regular archives of the Bureau of the Mint. Such pieces, if adopted for coinage, will be returned by the Director, and receipted for by the superintendent.
  18. The 1964 half shown in the first post is not a proof.
  19. Here's the URL of a short video (3 min), maybe that will work. https://fredericksburg.com/news/state-and-regional/second-lee-monument-time-capsule-is-opened-and-initial-items-match-the-1887-inventory/article_76723fb7-05a4-5454-a726-3b9534dd9e76.html
