  1. The first photo is a raw 1902 coin that sold on eBay on 12/4/20.

The second photo is the same 1902 coin sold on eBay 12/27/20 with a little color added.

The coin in the NGC holder with a 1907 graded MS63 RB is currently for sale on eBay by the seller that bought the raw coin and sold the raw coin with color added. The eBay seller is selling a number of NGC graded coins that have the same toning look.

Is the NGC coin AT?  If the coin is AT, should NGC look into the submitter of the 1907?

  2. It is important to know what coins would sticker and what coins would not sticker when buying coins.

Why is it "important"? Speaking only for myself, I've enjoyed the hobby immensely for 35 years without ever giving a thought to whether or not some given coin would sticker.

My comment was from a personal experience as a new collector, I did a complete mint and date set of Morgan Dollars without a buying a single CAC coin. I bought a few coins with flaws that I should not have purchased because of inexperience. I sent about 40 of what I thought were my better coins to CAC and only 30% of the coins received the sticker. After reviewing the coins that passed and failed, I was noticing a higher quality coin that had passed. Then I started buying coins with the intent to send to CAC, and my percentage of passed coins improved to over 60%. CAC has much more experience and expertise than I had and it help me buy better coins that were high end of the grade.

  3. I have found CAC very useful in my education on collecting quality coins. It is important to know what coins would sticker and what coins would not sticker when buying coins.

Over the past couple of years, I have learned a lot about grading coins by reading comments from Mark Feld on this forum. I have also learned a lot about buying coins that are high end of the grade by submitting coins to CAC for the sticker.

The typical coin with the CAC sticker will add 10% to 15% in value and a few coins will sell for about 30% more than the same grade. The CAC sticker also adds liquidity when selling the coin.

CAC is not perfect as there are coins with the CAC stickers that are not high end of the grade. Buy the coin not the slab or sticker.

  4. I really enjoyed collecting both NGC and PCGS coins in my registry sets. Sometimes I did spend extra money to get NGC registry points, and I was never going to compete with the top sets. I do wish that NGC would reconsider their position on PCGS coins. If the real issue is the PCGS grading, simply to not give any sets with PCGS coins awards. I am sure that NGC will save labor when the PCGS coins are omitted as there will no longer be a verification process for the PCGS coins.

After the first of the year, I will be crossing over my NGC coins to PCGS for my active 7070 coin type registry set. I figure it will cost me about $500 to convert my set to PCGS and I still need about 40 coins to complete my type set. The one thing that I do like about the PCGS registry point system is that I am not as tempted to upgrade a coin for a few points.

  5. I am going to bite the bullet as I am moving on to the PCGS Registry. My paid membership at NGC ends later this month and I will not be renewing. My NGC Registry type set has 24 PCGS coins and 13 NGC coins. 6 of the NGC coins are under $100, and I will sell these and buy PCGS coins. The 7 NGC coins over $200 each have CAC stickers and these coins I will send to PCGS for crossover. I understand If I show the documentation on a crossover CAC will re-sticker. If the coins do not cross, I will crack out or sell.

I started using the PCGS Registry today as I entered 3 PCGS coins and what a pain the software is to figure out. I do like the virtual 7070 album at PCGS.

Physics-Fan, you have an amazing PL type set and I am sorry that I will not be able to follow your collection journey on the NGC registry.

Bill Jones, I feel your pain and agree with you 100%.

I will still buy the NGC coin that is outstanding, but I am going to start drinking the Kool-Aid ATS.

  6. I am in the middle of collecting a Type Set with both NGC and PCGS certified coins in the NGC registry. I like to use the NGC registry as a place to photograph and keep records about my coins. MY sets will never compete for the top prizes. This announcement is really disappointing as I am being forced by NGC to make a decision how I will collect in the future. I am leaning toward converting my collection to PCGS as I have more PCGS coins. This will most likely mean that I will not buy any more NGC coins unless I feel that the coin will cross to PCGS.
