Congratulations to all who won a Registry Award for 2015!

While my passion for this hobby lies in the aspect of "the hunt", it is always nice to receive recognition. So I commend NGC for issuing it's yearly awards and recognizing the many collectors in our hobby! How they review so many sets is beyond me.As always it was exciting waiting for the awards to be announced and then a pleasure reviewing the many amazing winning sets afterwards. There are some passionate collectors out there and all the winners of this year's awards were very deserving! The time, effort and expense that goes into putting these sets together is very impressive and worthy of recognition. I won't lie, I was a somewhat disappointed to not see my set: "The Global Silver Coin Collection" listed in the Custom Set awards. I thought it was worthy. I worked hard on it and since last year I added 195 additional quality silver coins from 23 new countries for a total of 430 silver coins from 80 countries. I designed a new custom header for my set and added even more info to it's content. All 430 coins are illustrated and have a full write up, including each coin's silver content, purity, mintage, design and registry statistics. I am however only more motivated to keep improving the quality, rarity and diversity of this unique set!I did notice that since it's inception the award for "Best Overall Custom Set" has gone to a set that contains So Called Dollars, Medals, Replicas and Tokens 7 of 11 times. That being said maybe my silver COIN collection doesn't even have a chance?Regardless....way to go NGC! The registry, the registry awards and the journals are top notch and I am proud to be a member!Happy collecting.http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=14077To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. With it being the holiday season I scaled back my coin purchases, but I just realized that I had earned some eBay Bucks over the past few months.
So I got online and started to search the marketplace. I found a nice white 1901 MS 64 Morgan listed for only $75.88 and with my $19.14 in eBay Bucks I paid only $56.74 for a $125.00 Morgan....that is 55% off value! Pretty amazing deal and a nice addition to my collection.
    Happy collecting.

I'm anxiously awaiting the results of the NGC Registry Awards!
It's always fun to review all the amazing sets and admire the creativity of some. I review all the winners and appreciate the time, expense and effort put into each one. There's so many deserving and passionate collectors.
I'm also hoping to see my set on the list! Best of luck to all.

Last years registry awards were a thrill to me and being a winner was a real inspiration to step up my collecting and this year I did just that... in a serious way! I set out with the goal of winning best overall custom set. While I know this is a long shot, I looked long and far at coin shows, auctions and networking to acquire as many examples of global silver coinage from all eras, circulation and non circulating.
My collection THE GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION at the time of last years deadline for the registry awards contained 233 silver coins from 53 different countries. This year at the deadline the collection contains 427 silver coins from 80 different countries! Not only did I almost double the collection in size, but the coins I added were of much more value and scarcity. There have been a few coin collecting traditionalists on the chat boards that have tried to degrade my collection and I understand (I encourage those who do to please view my collections slide show). I know this is a hobby dominated by older men who collect exclusively circulation United States coinage and I respect their passion and bankrolls! But I collect solely precious metal coins (silver) of very limited mintage, many of my coins are the only graded examples or the finest graded example. Within my custom registry set there are 9 #1 competitive sets and many more within the top tier. Besides the Dan Hughes collection I know of no other more extensive collection of global silver in the registry. I dont know of many others that can say such....
Happy collecting and best of luck finding those rare and elusive coins!
My final additions this week are:
*NGC MS 62 1947 Panama Balboa, limited mintage of 500,00 and NGC total pop of 187.
*NGC PF 68 2011 Andorra 5 Dinars , limited mintage of 2,500 and NGC total pop of 8.
*NGC PF 67 2000 Gibraltar 1 Royal, limited mintage of 10,000and NGC total pop of 3.
*NGC VF 30 1789 Germany 16 Schillings, limited mintage of 80,000 and this is the only NGC graded example.

I was fortunate enough to make several purchases over the past couple weeks and I finally had some time to take photos and add the coin details to my set: The Global Silver Coin Collection.

http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=14077Here's 4 of my favorites from the past couple weeks:1. 1990 J Germany 10 Mark Teutonic Order MS 662. 2015 United States John F. Kennedy 1oz. Silver Medal MS 693. 2016 Somalia 100 Shillings Elephant MS 69 ER4. 1999 Monaco 100 Frans Rainier Anniversary MS 62The Monaco coin is the rarest of the batch having a mintage of just 20,000, this being one of only 2 NGC graded examples. What's even cooler about this coin is that I purchased it from a non coin collector for only $11.50 and the NGC World Coin Price Guide list the MS 60 at $75.00 and the MS 63 at $80.00 (so I value it at about $78.00)! You have to love finds like this one....happy collecting! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

This week I was fortunate enough to add 4 fun silver coins to my Global Silver Coin Collection:
    1. 1775 Bavaria Maximilian III Josef Taler NGC AU 53
    2. 2010 Great Britain Britannia 2 Pound NGC MS 69
    3. 2001 Gibraltar Coronation of Queen Victoria 1 Crown PFUC 69 (w/emerald inlay)
    4. 1954 Czechoslovakia Slovak Uprising 25 Korun MS 64
The Gibraltar and Czech coins were both additions from new countries to my collection....the set now contains coins from 76 nations! The set is becoming increasingly more diverse, with circulated and non-circulated silver coinage spanning 18 centuries. My quest to acquire an example of all silver coinage minted continues and I have a long way to go!
    Happy collecting.

Ive been anticipating today for a few months! Today is the bi-annual Virginia Beach Coin Show presented by the Tidewater Coin Club at the Virginia Beach Covention Center.
The show is always a quality event with local dealers and many others from DC, Maryland and North Carolina. I always manage to find something new or unique and I am hoping to add my 400th silver coin to my collection today with a couple acquisitions.
Looking forward to good conversations about numismatics, perusing all the dealer tables, the door prizes and raffles!
If anyone else is attending please comment on the chat board.
    Happy Collecting.
**UPDATE: Just arrived home from the show and had a great time. I picked up 7 NGC graded silver coins, the finest of which was a 1987 France Silver 100 Francs graded PF70. It is 1 of only 2 at PF70 and pictured at top left. Definitely headed back tomorrow!

My set The Global Silver Coin Collection is approaching the 400 coin mark (393) with many new additions and it has reached a couple milestones recently: it reached over 5,000 views and entered its third year of existence. I have also expanded on the sets information (which won most informative set last year) concerning silver in modern times.

Currently within this custom set there are now 9 #1 competitive registry sets and many more top tier competitive registry sets. A main focus of mine recently is Morgan Dollars and I am well on my way to a full set of blast white Morgans for inclusion in this custom set.

It has become a real challenge to find coins from new countries as the set has reached 74 different nations, which has made the hunt even more challenging and fun! While I know to be worthy of Best Overall Custom Set my set may require more rare silver coin entries, but I am dedicated and having a blast searching for new silver coins. Thanks to all who contribute to this community of collectors! I really enjoy reading all the journal entries and viewing all the amazing sets!HAPPY COLLECTING!http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=14077To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Numismatics has really become a passion for me in the last 4 years and I found that with so many coins available you have to focus on one type of coin. For me it is silver, silver coinage from all over the globe!

Last year it was an honor and very exciting for me to win the NGC Registry Award for Most Informative Custom Set for my set THE GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION. After receiving the recognition in the registry, the badge for my set and the plaque in the mail I told myself I wanted more out of this set. I decided to start a quest to make the set worthy of Best Overall Custom Set!Since December of last year I have gone on the hunt and some what of a purchasing spree adding 124 high quality silver coins from 15 new countries to the set for a grand total of 356 coins from 72 countries. While only a fraction of my coins (266/356 or 75%) fit in any competitive sets there are 10 #1 competitive sets within my custom set totaling 84,915 registry points giving me a ranking of #1,303. Many of my coins are rare and the only NGC graded example, if I were able to receive some registry points for the 25% of my coins that do not fit in any competitive set I think I would rank in at least the top few hundred collectors overall. Aside from content, quality and value I also decided to make the presentation of my set as appealing as possible and I recently designed a new header graphic that contains images of actual coins within the set. I have also ensured to add as much information as possible to include complete descriptions (weight, fineness, size, mintage, obverse and reverse details) and photos to every coin. Not sure what else I can add or edit to help improve the set and its worthiness of best overall but I am open to any suggestions and/or constructive criticism. Thanks in advance for any input!Happy collecting.http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=14077To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. I was really excited to add coins from two different countries to my collection this week!
My custom set THE GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION now contains 339 silver coins from 70 different countries! Its becoming more and more difficult to find coins from new countries, so whenever I am able to add a new country to my collection its rather exciting for me.
I hope everyone is enjoying and having as much fun with the hobby as I am!
Please give my set a view:

I have made some great April additions to my custom registry set THE GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION. Within this custom set there are 11 #1 competitive sets now!
I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase 28 new silver coins for the collection, but I was only able to add one new country....Bolivia (the collection contains coins from 67 different nations so adding a silver coin from a new nation isnt that frequent). My additions span 5 centuries from 1620s Polish Polkers to modern day bullion. My four favorite additions are:
    1. 1880 Morgan Dollar graded MS 65+. Its a true blast white coin with lots of great luster!
    2. 1974 Panama, 20 Balboas, Simon Bolivar, 4 ounce .925 Ag, PF 68. This coin has a deep cameo and its size and holder make it very impressive!
    3. 2013 Mexico, 2 Onza, MS 70 Early Release. This is a fantastic addition to my Mexican coins and once again the size and holder make it all the more impressive!
    4. 2011 Australia, silver dollar, Kookaburra, MS 70. This is the 14th Kookaburra in the set and a fine perfect 70 coin!
Hope everyone is enjoying the hobby and having fun with the hunt!
Please give my set a view....

I am well on my way to achieving my year end goal for my custom set THE GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION.
I set a goal to have 300 silver coins from 70 different countries by the end of 2015 and I am well on my way with 298 silver coins from 66 different countries! I also created a new image for the header of my set containing actual coins in my set.
This week I added some fun new coins:
    1. 2000 Liberia S$10 Air Force One Boeing 707 PF 69 Ultra Cameo, which had a low mintage of just 20,000 and is currently the only graded example.
    2. 1987 China S10Y Panda PF 69 Ultra Cameo, which was the first 1 oz. .999 fine silver Panda with a low mintage of only 31,000 and a current NGC population of just 949.
    3. 1991 USSR S3R Moscows Arch of Triumph PF 67 Ultra Cameo, which had a mintage of just 40,000 and has a very low NGC population of just 29.
    4. 2011 Israel S1NS Yitzhak Rabin Nobel Peace Prize MS 69, which had a mintage of only 1,800 and has a very low NGC population of just 4.

I recently decided to try and add the 283 silver world coins I have in my custom set (THE GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION) to competitive sets so I could get registry points for them and see how I rank amongst other collectors.
After going through each coin, I wasnt able to find a spot in any competitive set for 1/4 of my coins (73 silver coins). I did however end up ranking at #1595 but would be much higher if I could receive points for all of my coins. I really wish there was a way to receive registry points in custom sets (of course barring duplicates).
Also I noticed some odd points being giving to some of my coins. Coins that are much more rare, older and valuable are being issued less points than those more common, newer and less valuable. Such as:
    1. My 1976 MS 67 Ike Silver Dollar which is valued at $90.00 received only 205 points, while my 1972 PF 68 UC Ike Silver Dollar which is valued at $27.50 received 248 points?!
    2. My 1987 MS 69 Silver Eagle which is valued at $65.00 received only 220 registry points, while my 2013 MS 69 Silver Eagle which is valued at $60.00 received 237 registry points?!
    3. My 2005 PF 70 Silver Roosevelt Dime which is valued at $50.00 received only 201 registry points, while my 2008 PF 70 Roosevelt Silver Dime which is valued at $42.50 received 320 registry points?!
    4. My 1989 MS 68 Panda valued at $85.00 received 404 registry points, while my 2002 MS 68 Panda valued at $80.00 received 489 registry points?!
Maybe someone can explain to me how this works? Should not a more valuable and rare coin receive a higher amount of registry points than one worth much less and more common?

I was pleasantly surprised to receive a very nice NGC plaque this week in recognition of my NGC Award for 2014 (Most informative Custom Set). The registry, the registry awards and plaques of recognition just make the hobby all the more fun and I applaud NGC for providing us collectors these things for our hobby!
I've put a lot of time into my custom set and have added about 50 new world silver coins to the set since the award (283 total world silver coins from 65 different countries). Today I acquired a NGC 1987 Chinese Panda PF 69 Ultra Cameo coin from Silver Eagle coins in Virginia Beach, Virginia (hands down the best coin shop in the Hampton Roads area). While the internet and it's many venues for purchasing coins is always fun, I really enjoy dealing with local dealers who have actual store fronts. It's always a good experience to go hang out at a local coin store and talk with people that share the same passion for the hobby! Plus you never know what you may find, as people are always bringing in new coins to sell or trade.
While it was a great honor to receive the registry award this year my goal is to receive the award for Best Overall Custom Set some day. If you haven't viewed my set please do, I enjoy discussing it's coins and I like feedback and constructive criticism.

I was surprised and extremely honored to have received a 2014 NGC Registry Award!
I've really enjoyed building this set and researching and fully documenting each coin that I add to the collection.
I do have to say that receiving this award was actually more exciting than any coin acquisition I have ever made!

I am liking the new NGC holders!
I recently purchased a NGC MS 69 2015 Burundi Silver African Lion Series coin from Modern Coin Mart and noticed that NGC has new holders. The label field is much larger and there are two lips on each side of the label field to hold the label flat and smooth. I know personally I have several labels that are bunched up or uneven, hopefully this new holder will solve that issue. I also noticed that the hologram that usually dominates the entire bottom of the label now only covers the right quarter over the NGC logo.
Has anyone else seen these new holders, if so how do you feel about them?

    ?
I was hoping someone could explain to me the reason why coins in Custom Sets receive no Registry Points? I have invested some serious time, money and effort into assembling a pretty impressive collection of silver coinage in my custom set yet I have no registry points or ranking to show for it!

    Looking to pick your brains!
    Hello,
I am new at the hobby and I created a Custom Registry set in August of 2013 titled THE GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION and I was hoping to get some guidance, help and critique from the forum users. I strive to eventually receive a registry award and I am looking for pointers on what more I could do to help my set reach that standard.
Please go to my profile to view the set listed under CUSTOM SETS.
I really appreciate your time and hope you all have fun collecting!
