Found something Special Hiding on my Gold Dollar, check out the pics! I also published a version of this on CoinTalk.
So I was taking my first photo of my newest coin, and WHAM, something special jumped out at me. A quick look on NGC Explorer, and confirmed what I was seeing. I Just found a 1854 G$1 Type 2 DDO slabbed in a plain vanilla 1854 Type 2.
Check it out, let me know if you agree. some Guides say it's worth $1800, but that is clearly optimistic. A non-CAC AU53 was sold by GC 1 year ago for only $550, and a non-CAC MS61 on HA sold for ~$1500.
I'm think re-holdered in a nice new Scratch Resistant holder, this may be a $800 coin.
There have been very few graded as far as I can tell. PCGS says 5 total, NGC says 12 total. Not sure how rare that makes it, as some people probably don't even look.
"Doubling is seen in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and most notably in the beads of Liberty's headdress."

I am pretty happy right now.

First Purchases of 2015 for CAC Type Set, 1838 SEATED LIBERTY DIME, NO DRAPERY, LARGE STARS NGC AU55 CAC and 1854 GOLD DOLLAR - TYPE 2, NGC AU55 CAC.
My first two coins of 2015 have been purchased, shipped, arrived, and accepted into my CAC Type Set. Both coins are NGC graded and CAC approved with a green bean.

1838 SEATED LIBERTY DIME, NO DRAPERY, LARGE STARS NGC AU55 CAC.
    1854 GOLD DOLLAR - TYPE 2, NGC AU55 CAC.
The dime was purchased from a fellow collector and CAC member, and the dollar was my first purchase ever from Pinnacle Rarities. I've always admired Pinnacles website, but this was the first coin I saw that I both could afford and needed, and I did not hesitate to pull the trigger.
The Type 2 Gold is harder to come by than Type 1 or 3, and this completes my mini Type set of One Dollar Gold coins.
If you are not familiar with my CAC set and are curious as to what it's all about, please check out my custom registry set and comment below. Essentially, I am restricting my coins to only CAC approved examples, but this is by no means restricting the fun or creativity of my set. I think I have found many great coins within my budget, and that are free of most problems.
I have noticed that some minor rim dings do not disqualify a coin at CAC, as you will see on the dime. I am trying to figure out how much rim issues of those size bother me, and I keep expanding my personal criteria of what coins make it into my set. We all have our coin pet peeves, and I am (slowly) coming to realize rim problems are mine. Still a great coin with lots of detail.
Have a great 2015 and I look forward to posting here more often. I spend alot of time on CoinTalk, and some of you may know me from there. I hope to make better use of the NGC Journal system and want to make some new friends here.

A Few Additions to my CAC Type Set:

1876 FIVE-CENT PIECE - SHIELD, NO RAYS PCGS MS45 CAC
    1853 THREE-CENT PIECES - SILVER, TYPE 1 NGC MS58 TYPE 1 CAC
1921 SILVER DOLLARS - PEACE LIBERTY HEAD PCGS MS53 HIGH RELIEF
1818 QUARTER DOLLAR - CAPPED BUST, LARGE SIZE PCGS MS06 CAC
1917 QUARTER DOLLAR - STANDING LIBERTY, TYPE 1 PCGS MS55 TYPE 1 CACI picked up a few more coins in the last two weeks since my first ever NGC Journal entry. Here are the coins:1876 FIVE-CENT PIECE - SHIELD, NO RAYS PCGS MS45 CAC1853 THREE-CENT PIECES - SILVER, TYPE 1 NGC MS58 TYPE 1 CAC1921 SILVER DOLLARS - PEACE LIBERTY HEAD PCGS MS53 HIGH RELIEF1947 S QUARTER DOLLARS - WASHINGTON, SILVER NGC MS64 STAR CAC1818 QUARTER DOLLAR - CAPPED BUST, LARGE SIZE PCGS MS06 CAC1917 QUARTER DOLLAR - STANDING LIBERTY, TYPE 1 PCGS MS55 TYPE 1 CACYou will notice that the 1921 High Relief does not say "CAC", that is because I have found it hard to find a nice XF45 - AU58 1921 Peace with a green CAC sticker. There are plenty of MS62...MS65 coins, but very many in nicely circulated, which is what I wanted and what I can afford. So I am gambling on the AU53 and will submit to CAC myself.I have not seen several of these coins yet in-hand, but 1917 25c Type 1 is a stunner, and I hope the rest are as well. I do like aquiring a few nice examples of each month, and this lets me focus on the shrinking pool of coins. It is getting harder and harder, but recently I added a few more names to my "Dealer Directory" of dealer sites I check once a week or more. A really great discovery was a local dealer to me in Maine, Gerry Fortin. Site is great, and we sent a few emails back adn forth so I definately will be buying some nice seated dimes from him in the near future. Recent additions to my CAC approved Type Set (custom NGC registry set). And my thoughts on future purchases.
I have been hunting for new coins to add to my CAC Type set, and it's getting harder! I recently created a "want-list", and listed every circulation strike US coin type I could think of. I marked many types as "TOO COSTLY" to buy, as my budget is $100 to $350 per coin. I marked coins I already own, and marked coins in RED that I am actively searching for. My budget only allows me to buy 1 or 2 nice coins per month, but since I am running out of easy targets, this should be fine.
My most recent purchases can be seen in my customer set gallery, I have included a single photo in this journal entry. The list of newps for the month of May, which I financed by selling a 1913 5C Type 1 MS67 CAC and a few others:
1826 CENT - CORONET PCGS MS 35, CAC
    1913 FIVE-CENT PIECES - BUFFALO, TYPE 1 PCGS MS 65 TYPE 1, CAC
1874 GOLD DOLLAR - TYPE 3 PCGS MS 58, CAC
1806 HALF CENT - DRAPED BUST PCGS MS 25 SMALL 6 NO STEMS C-1, BROWN, CAC
1838 HALF DOLLAR - CAPPED BUST, REEDED EDGE PCGS MS 45, CAC
1951 HALF DOLLAR - FRANKLIN PCGS MS 63 BUGS BUNNY, CAC
1853 HALF DOLLAR - SEATED LIBERTY, ARROWS & RAYS PCGS MS 40 ARROWS & RAYS, CAC
1836 QUARTER DOLLAR - CAPPED BUST, SMALL SIZE PCGS MS 30, CAC
1832 HALF CENT - CLASSIC HEAD NGC MS 55 BROWN, CAC
1866 FIVE-CENT PIECE - SHIELD, RAYS PCGS MS 45 RAYS, CAC
1831 HALF DIME - CAPPED BUST PCGS MS 45, CAC
1850 DIME - SEATED LIBERTY, STARS OBVERSE PCGS MS 40, CAC
1854 HALF CENT - CORONET, BRAIDED HAIR PCGS MS 50 C-1, BROWN, CAC
1853 HALF DIME - SEATED LIBERTY, STARS OBVERSE PCGS MS 53 ARROWS, CAC
1909 CENT - LINCOLN, VDB WHEAT REVERSE PCGS MS 65 RED BROWN, CAC
1857 CENT - FLYING EAGLE NGC MS 45, CAC

I am most actively looking for a circulated Trade Dollar and a circulated 20C Type. The hunt is fun.
