  1. A few weeks ago I posted pictures of a raw AU 1914 Barber Half I purchased off eBay at a "Buy it Now" auction at a "too good to be true" price. Here are the images again:

I sent the coin to PCGS for grading; I was hoping for a 55. The results posted last night; the coin came in at an AU 58! Needless to say I'm very pleased with the results, but now I'm the proud owner of two '14 PCGS AU 58's (I already had one). What are the odds of that happening? I've been searching years for a nice '13 or '15 and I stumble across two AU 58 '14's in less than a year.

I'm open to trade offers on one of these; I'm not sure which one I'll keep. The one pictured has a great story, but my first one is a nicer coin (pictured in my NGC set with a green bean). I'm in need of a nice '96 O, '97 O, '01 O, '04 O, '04 S, '09 O, '13, and '15.

  2. About a month ago I cracked this half out of it's PCGS XF 45 holder, removed the green spot on the reverse, and submitted it raw to PCGS. It came back as a AU 55 (no new pictures of the holder). I doubt it would have made that jump if I submitted it for a "reconsideration" grade.

JeffRM, What did you use and how did you use it? I have a small green spot on a Liberty Nickel that needs to be removed ASAP!

    Really nice "four bits"!

I dipped the coin in acetone, but it didn't remove the "spot". It turns out the "spot" was an "object"; a quick poke with a toothpick took it off. Acetone is supposed to remove PVC, but in this case I think it had too much substance to do the trick. Trust me, I was very nervous during this delicate operation.

  3. I just received a new purchase and took some pictures to post. They show the detail well, but not the coins luster (they make it look dull). I still need to figure out this photography thing!

Here's the coin- an 1894 S Barber Half Dollar in a PCGS holder:

Does anyone care to guess the grade?
