Thank you so much for your high resolution images. I will have to try your approaches.

I tried an old 35MM film, manual focus 55mm Micro-Nikkor on my digital Nikon

and below are the results. It appears to have an edge over the AF 105 MM Nikkor.

You can be the judge. It's a dime. I had to move the tripod to about 5" from the coin.
