What a Rotten Shame!

EBay Dealers with multiple listings of 5, 10, 20, and more sets on hand . .

For those of us who followed the rules and stayed within the lines, and picked up our 5 sets or less, and then actually got them -- COOL! We got what we wanted for our collections, and one for that special gift, and didn/t make pigs of ourselves. But that's far from what happened to the rest of the many hopeful collectors that tried to buy a set from the US Mint on October 27.

Having viewed and reviewed a ton of Journal Posts and Ads for sale of the 25th Anniversary Sets on EBay, CoinVault, Silvertowne, etc, and so on, we see capitalism flourishing. It is appears that the 100,000 total Mint Sets seems to have been purchased by probably less than 35,000 people and groups. This left tens of thousands of individual collectors in the lurch, "Beat" out of a 25th Anniv. Set on that fateful day in October, now relegated to the secondary markets to get a Set, now costing nearly triple the price. And what of those still hopefuls(like my Son) who are even Today, getting that empty "Backordered" promise emailed from the Mint for a One-Set order?

What can anybody say about this injustice, but "What a Rotten Shame!"

On our Journals and Posts alone, there are several members who have happily listed the grades for their few sets- and it's Good to see the occasional dream come true. But we also encountered a couple who quoted that they're also waiting on 5 or 10 additional sets to come back from NGC(now that's more than 5, Ain't it?). With so many having been screwed, rather than rubbing it in, maybe that kind of info should be kept under wraps. Next we have the vultures on EBay, with multiple listings showing 5, 10, 20 sets each and more on hand, and finally the Dealers who are still buying up sets from anyone who wants to sell to them cheap, and then hawking the same sets on TV and online, still at $1398 for '69's and $2798-for the All-70 Sets (is anyone really buying those?).

EBay is still flooded with Anniversary sets. We've seen the All-70 sets go down in price dramatically, some selling for less than $1000 this week, and the 69's at under $800. Quite the contrast to that first week when those poor saps paid as much as $3800! And how did those guys get Certified Sets in their hands to sell during that 1st week anyway? EBay forbade anyone to pre-sell. I got my order in online by around 1pm on the 27th, and didn't get my set for 3 weeks, heck some have only just received their sets this week.

Those Big Business-Guys, who ran up their credit cards on the big quantities, thinking they were going to make a killing in this market, and still holding out on the $2000 or more price tag, I say "Better put 'em away for a couple of years!, or just sell for what you can get now", and pay-off the cards. You still come out ahead by a few hundred bucks per set.

After grading and shipping costs, we all ended up paying over $400 for a $299.95 set. Selling on EBay added another $150-$180 in EBay, PayPal, and shipping fees, totaling about $580 per set (regardless of grade). If that was an all 70-Set, hopefully you Sold at around $1200, netting you about $600-$650. It's almost at the point where one might consider breaking-up a set, and make more by selling the individual coins. Still, I suppose in the grand scheme of things, a few hundred bucks per set isn't such a bad payday. If you can hang on to the sets for a couple of years, your margin will most-likely be much more.

The gluttons are now flooding the market with so many sets, that prices are dropping like a rock, each week at a new low! Had the US Mint been able to uphold the buying limits, and allow many of those individuals who missed out, to get a set, it's a good bet that prices would be much higher today, at least double what they are now. Now we'll have to wait for all those inventories to be liquidated. Once prices have bottemed out, the real buying will start, and prices will start to rise- Slowly.
