Standing LIberty On Her Way

Scrimping and saving for months finally pays off.

There are lots of bad things about getting older. My feet hurt, I can?t just bounce off the floor like I used to, I find myself shaking my fist at the reality shows that proliferate the airwaves today, and unfortunately the ?season? I most strongly associate with mid-April involves taxes, not baseball.

But, I will say, the best thing about being an adult is having some actual money to spend, albeit only every few months after setting aside $5 and $10 here and there. And, since I have rekindled my initial love of numismatics, that means saving for beautiful coin specimens at grades that ? as a kid - I would have felt lucky to even VIEW much less purchase.

The latest for me is a 1929-D Standing Liberty Quarter, graded MS65 through NGC. This will be the eighth coin in my Type Set collection, and since I have asked the dealer to send it off through the NGC reholder program for one of those snappy Edgeview holders (man, I love those things!), I probably won?t receive it for 2-3 weeks.

No matter. It?s a beauty, or it appears to be in pictures. I like my coins pure white, with as little toning as possible, and aside from some champagne toning at the top of the obverse, it appears to be mainly white and lustrous. At least, that?s what the dealer said. The Standing Liberty Quarter, to me, is one of those coins that is just magnificently designed and a splendid piece of art, and it will be an honor to add a high-grade example of this coin to my growing collection.

Anyway, I hope Springtime is finding everyone well, and thanks for all who have offered support and encouragement. Happy coin collecting everyone!
