Use of the Registry

My perception

I have been collecting for 50+ years and have enjoyed every day. My prize collection is small cents from 1857 to date. With over 400 coins I am very happy with them as they are although I would love for them to be certified. I feel it is too costly to have them NGC certified which means the value of my set has decreased. If they were certified as a collector I would not care what the point value or the ranking was because I love my set as it is. Yes there are a few coins that I would upgrade but not many. Many collectors have sent in there old coins for grading only to find that their coins have been altered. I have approximately five or six coins missing from my collection that will cost excess of $1,000.00 each. With that type of price tag today, I would opt to buy them certified although this would interrupt my storage uniformity.

Since the inception of NGC certification and the registry I decided to get on the ban wagon. So I am putting together a 2006 NGC certification coin collection. In order to complete this task my collection had to be in eight competitive categories of the registry. Of those eight categories I will be sharing five first places listing with other collectors and two categories I would be in first place alone. Also when combining these coins in a custom set it allowed me to add ten additional coins that would not be in the competitive sets. My point being I don?t care about the rankings or where I place as a collector I want to assemble complete NGC top grade 2006 coin collection. My belief is a true collector takes pride in his/her collection not the rankings or points. Rankings and points are for investors.

Now to stir the pot. PCGS does not allow NGC coins in their registry. How would you feel if NGC took that same policy? Many of the registry set rankings and points would really drop and leaving many of you very angry. To be fair and competitive with PCGS, I think NGC should not allow PCGS coins in the registry. To be fair for those collectors who already have PCGS coins listed, as of a certain starting date, NGC would grandfather those coins that are already listed in the registry now.
