Sometimes old collections can reveal new treasures.
The day was slowly going by and I was trying to find a fifth coin to send in for grading. I decided to dig through several old proof sets from the late 60's and 70's to find something worth having graded, either to keep or to sell. As I scanned through all the die varieties for each year, I kept coming up with nothing. Nothing special, no missing mint marks, nothing but a dead end.
I have owned this stack of proof sets for over ten years and have never set down and looked them over. Just opened the boxes and took a look and put them right back.
Finally I got to the last two sets and put them under the light and there it was. Hidden in plain sight for over ten years. A 1972 Kennedy Half Proof with a clearly doubled obverse. I had to look at it twice to make sure my eyes were not starting to blur from all the coins I had been looking at all day, but there it was as plain as day.
All the other coins I was planning to have graded lost my attention for now, until this one gets back and I can see what the graders at NGC think of it. Now the game of wait and see begins.
