Morgan Mania

11/1/10

... I finally started my Morgan Set. I'm working on all the inexpensive MS coins first, then I will move on to the CC's down the line.

11/2/10

... I've been putting off for awhile on the Morgans, I've been concentrating on the smaller denominations first.

I'm 5 coins away from completing a run (mostly raw) on the Cents from 1793 to date (all the Dansco holes, I'm not a big variety collector). I'm missing...you guessed it, all three 1793's, the 1799, and the 1804, but I'll pick them off one by one over time.

Then I moved onto nickels, which I've got almost a complete run to include a the 1918/7, three legged, and all Barbers, but I'm still missing the Shield Proofs.

After nickels I moved to dimes, currently I'm about 75% of the way through the seated Liberty Dimes, which I've found to be the hardest collection to complete since it's nearly impossible to find the civil war years and a couple of the CC's (do have a 1872-cc), and when you do find them, you almost have to take out a second mortgage to pick them up. I've got complete sets of barbers, mercs, and roosevelts.

Now gets to the fun part, about half way through dimes, I joined the NGC site (Gold) so I could get the free submissions. I found that it gave me a lot more interest and insight and hooked on the collectors society web. Now I find myself searching for regisrty coins (NGC/PCGS). My baby right now is the Wheat Cent collection. I'll never have a top ten set, but my goal is to complete the set 100% (so far only a handful, 5 above me) have a complete set. I'm over 60% of the way there now.

As for my other sets, I've completed the Washington Quarters, State Quarters (all MS), and have about 80% of the Standing Lib's and Barber Quarters in my Dansco Books. I've compleetd the Kennedy, Franklin, and Walker Halves and have about 40% of the barbers down. Dollar wise, I've completed the Presidents to date, Sac's to date, Anthony's, Eik's, and Peace Dollars, and starting my Morgan Pet project. I also have well over a dozen nice colonials to include some Fugio's, Nova's, a Talbut Allum Lee, a couple of Washington's, and some other fun stuff.

The next big question is how much and what to certify next, I find that the cost of certification can be brutal, my last submission with shipping ran just under $400 for about 15 coins, does anyone have any suggestions on how to cut down the cost? Does PCGS or NGC offer any Promo's or specials for submission that I'm not aware of?
