Quarter Eagle Collecting
The coin for everyone.
The quarter eagle is in many ways a great coin for any collector. I only wish I had started to collect them sooner. Both the Liberty Head and the Indian head $2.50 gold coins are beautifully designed. Both coins have many ways to collect them; date sets, short sets and mint mark sets. Both coins have affordable and expensive options for collecting them.
I started to buy raw Indian head and liberty head quarter eagles by chance. I was in a coin shop and they had a few in a box with bullion coins. I found an XF Indian head Quarter eagle and looked at it for a while. I knew I wanted to buy about a tenth of an OZ. of gold that day so I went for the 1908 Indian head. I paid 5% over spot for the coin and did not think any thing of it.
For the next few weeks I bought my standard tenth oz. American gold eagles. Then one Sunday, I finally had some time to look at the Indian head gold eagle I had purchased and I said to myself, "these are amazing little coins." My research would show the full set was very affordable minus the 1911-D. My father and brother had a few liberty head quarter eagles and I examined them also. I had just found my new project.
Then towards the end of 2009 and beginning of this year I committed myself to these two coins and have been searching inventories for them since then. I was surprised to see how much fun I have had with the coins. There is not a ton written about the coins so research can be a bit daunting. I think I may have made a lifelong commitment to these little eagles but I know it will be rewarding to slowly build both sets.
If anyone has any information on quarter eagles or any good stories please let me know. I am focusing on the Indian head set first in AU55+ and then I will really start the Liberty head set. I will start with the 1900-1907 short set then slowly jump around building a set the best I can with my current budget.
Current goals:I am looking for an MS-63 1929 to replace the MS-61 I recently sold to buy three AU-58 liberty head eagles. I will keep everyone up to date on my treasure hunt for quarter eagles and as always enjoy your collecting!
