searching circulated Memorial bank rolls
no profitmaking via NGC grades, but decent BU and variety finds
For Christmas 2008, my father-in-law gave my toddler a whiskey jar he'd filled in the 1980's with pennies from his spare change. Well, that reawakened the coin collector in me - two months later, I joined NGC and began submitting some of the pennies.
(My daughter's enjoying the action. She wants EVERY hole in her penny albums filled regardless of date, and she's excited about going to the bank to start a savings account with a full whiskey jar of reject pennies.)
Courtesy of the Christmas pennies, there've been quite a few MS 67 D mint marks from the 1980's. I've been reexamining some of my old saved spare change. MS 66 from the 1990's doesn't exactly pay for its own grade, but I've had a number of those.
And then there are the circulated bank roll searches. I love these more than slab collecting. Money's not money to me unless it's changed hands. RPM's, pitted dies and strike doubles have been easy to find. Last year's searches found a few steelies and an Indian Head. Nothing to retire on, but fun at least.
And the copper bullion bag is growing ... I don't know an assayer on my block just yet ...
I suppose as the economy heats back up, we'll be seeing more original bank wraps at the bank and fewer recirculated coinage.
Cheers
