To build or not to build... a classic proof set.

I enjoy listening to people in the numismatic industry/business expressing their professional point of views. This weekend, I was viewing a video from DLRC. I was listening to the market report when two people were talking at the same time, and I missed the ??? something. So I e-mailed the person and asked what did he said on the video. Surprised or not surprised with today technology, I received a response from you guessed it...the person I e-mailed (this was Saturday and I believed the office or store was closed). We e-mailed back and forth (a couple of times) to be sure I understand what was said.

So I decided to check (on the NGC registry-see below *) to see what I have. Low and behold, I have not one, but two proof coins from a purchase from ICS of Ohio (a 1872 Seated Half NGC graded and a 1880 Seated Dime PCGS graded). Next I checked with the NGC registry to see what is needed (how many items are in a set). The 1872 set consists of 10...yes, ten items (check for yourself). And I thought the US Mint oversell, the collectors, a 36 items 2009 Mint Set. Then I decided to check with the dealer's website and sure enough (low and behold again) there was not one, but two items for 1872 and to top thing off, two items for the 1880 (totaling four items to purchase). Now things starting to heat up...financing a big purchase. I just purchased a real nice item and placed it on lay-a-way with the same coin company (wheel spinning in my head).

Fast forward to today (1/18/10 - a holiday...?). I am a person of action with some thinking. So I called the store/office (low and behold- third time), someone answered the call. I asked if the they were open and asked if the dealer person was in. After a flurry of back and forth with the dealer person, a deal was made. I presented my offer of finance to sweeten the close of the deal. I returned the real nice item and used its (nice item) deposit as payment down on the large purchase. Now because of budget restrain, I am planning to ask for a lay-a-way plan. Till I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, (I am on hold now) then I can start the hunt (as the collectors like to use the phrase). Enjoying the hobby cuz this is only money...
