A Good Hair Day of Sort

But definitely not with a strong Boston accent

All of the holiday guests have gone home and things have settled back into there semi-normal routine around the house. As peace and quiet once again is the order of the day, it seemed like a perfect time to take a break from the mid-week routine and pull out my box of carded coins and look through them to see what I could find. Many of the coins in this box came from the coins my parents had collected and stashed away over the years. When my dad gave them to me early this year, I just carded them up to prevent anymore unnecessary wear and tear on them. Every now and again I pull them out and go through a group of them. Tonight I just happened to pull out the Kennedy Halves.

I?d guess there are probably 50 to 60 Kennedy Halves in the box with maybe 12 or so from 1964 in the mix. Let me say up front, as a rule I am not a collector of variations or mint errors unless they are deemed major, warranting consideration to complete a set. More notable among these are the VDB variations of the 1909 Lincoln Penny, the 1955 DDO Lincoln Penny and the 1964 Accented Hair variation of the Kennedy Half. When I do run across other minor variations and errors, I sell them to offset my other coin purchases. Of course those major variations in coins justifying their inclusion in full set considerations end up as key coins in their respective sets. This is the case with the 1964 Accented Hair Kennedy Halve especially in a high grade Ultra Cameo Proof.

I know there are four key identifying features to a 1964 Accent Hair Kennedy Half, two on the obverse, the wishbone hair over the ear and the chopped flair on the ?I? in LIBERTY, and two on reverse, the broken rays on the 4 stars just to the right of the eagle head and the straight ?G? without the flair on the ?FG? initials just below the right leg of the eagle. The reverse features are necessary but not sufficient for identifying a 1964 Accented Hair Kennedy Half Dollar. Tonight something caught me off guard.

In the process of looking through the Kennedy halves, I found 3 with broken rays. One of those I quickly attributed to a weak strike based on the position of the stars but the other 2 were definitely the weak rays of an 64 Accented Hair Kennedy Half. I immediately checked Gasparro?s initials and, yes, both were straight ?G?s?. Neither, however, was a 64 Proof Accented Hair variety. So off I went on an internet search to see if there was some other variety related to the 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar. Here is where I sit scratching me head, trying to figure this out.

I found one and only one reference to a transition minting of coins with the Obverse #2 die and the Reverse #1 die. While I am sure this is not an earth shattering discovery, has anyone heard of or have knowledge of this transition minting of 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars?
