Silver Eagle
Not What I Expected
I recently sent in a Silver Eagle from another grading company and it was graded MS70. I wanted to get into an NGC slab so I could list it in my registry of coins, so I sent it off to NCS as it had some discoloration and I wanted it conserved. They in turn sent it to NGC for grading and I was greatly hoping for the same grade as was previously given to the coin. Yet when I got it back, though it was conserved and look great, it only had a MS69 grade. I am disappointed that the grade did not hold up. The coin in MS70 is much more valuable than the MS69 grade and I am not sure what to think of the grading system when there seems to be such a difference between grading companies. To be honest I did realize that the grade may not hold and was willing to take that chance and I realize that NGC is a company that does not give the highest grade unless the coin is flawless. Perhaps this coin is less than perfect, yet it looks flawless. The cost of this process is another factor, that it is not inexpensive to have a coin re-graded which make me wonder if I would do the same thing again. Perhaps I would have done better to sell the coin as it was on Ebay and buy one for the registry. Well this is all a learning process and we are bound to make costly mistakes as we collect.
